In 14 years I have never been asked for one of these, looking at the cost is it really the best option?

I had a teacher insist on these about 4 years ago took a while to source and extremely expensive.
Since then she has never asked for them again

I have a few of these in a cupboard in the chemistry lab. They would have been there for the last thirty years or so. Noone has ever asked me for them and until today I didn't know they went by the name of sintered glass funnels. I don't know under what cicumstances they would be used in chemistry. They were pretty much a novelty item that have been collecting dust.

Lyn.

They like them for the Barium Sulphate experiment in Chemistry but I couldn't source them at the time. When I did find them they were expensive and a proper filter paper will do for school chemistry. I also looked at how you would clean them and wasn't impressed.

We use to use Buchner filter funnels are once a year ; same prac. It is used with vacuum pump. Way too much hustle. They do not have to be glass, ours are porcelain but you can order plastic ones as well.

Hi Jillian
I bought some last year from Science Supply Australia. The catalog number was 25 85134 they were $40.75 each. Had to buy the guko rubbers that go with them as well and they were $3.45 Catalog number 29 20232. Bought the venturi vacuum pumps at $24.00 each. So it was an expensive exercise. However they have been used for the sulphate prac. every year and some of the IB girls have used them in their IA'S.

Ok now I know I can say we have these and use them for the sulfate prac too!! They work really well with the vaccuum pumps. Thety are easy to use and clean. I got mine from science supply too!! I think they are worth the expense. we have a set of 10 nowe but I have accumulated them over 5 years!!

When I read up on cleaning them, they had to be boiled in acid or some such rubbish and I thought that it was too hard and not worth the effort. So how do you clean them? I am supposing that stuff does get caught in the filter mechanism and would be hard to move.

I probably don't do a very good job!! Because they are dried in the oven I just loosen up the dried barium sulfate and wipe it out with paper towel. I then just give them a wash. Because the kids weigh everything before and after if there is a bit left over it will be taken into account then. Never had any problems as they are only ever used for this prac. Its all fairly bucket chemistry anyway!!

Is what you are looking for a sintered glass funnel.
This was discussed sometime last year, I put "funnel" into the search box and found the thread.
It seems they are available from Science supply but at a cost of $56.60 each (ex GST)

We've been using sintered glass funnels for the last few years, but have had problems with liquid leaking around the edges of the disc inside. Any advice on how to resolve this please?
