We have used sailors string (I think it is called) from Q-stores office max for many a year. But it is now obsolete. It is a very thin but strong string, fine cotton. Can any one suggest a company that sells it???????

I have been having the same problem. Do a google search on 'polyester sailmakers thread'. I found a company called Raymond Traders PTY Ltd who look promising. They're in South Australia.

Sorry I can't help you with a company that sells it, but I've just ordered some from Officemax in the West: fine cotton twine, 780m roll, code 1179462 $26.35 ea. WA office phone no is 08 9238 6800 if you want to give them a ring and get some freighted to you. I guess if Omax have discontinued it in the East, it's only a matter of time before the same applies here so maybe I should order more while I can.

For really strong thread I have been piching some of my husbands braided fishing line, it works great.

You can also try the following website: http://www.archeryshop.com.au/ - click on 'string' in the left hand side menu and check out the Brownell nylon serving thread. My husband uses it when making new strings for his bows and I've bought it for school use in the past. It's very thin, very strong and much cheaper freighting from Canberra.

What about plumbers line? Isn't that the same stuff? Just call a couple of hardware stores, especially the kind that cater to tradies.

Hi Kay, no only use fishing line in place of sailors line....!

Flame tests - we use solutions in aerosols & wire loops for some chemicals that don't like going in the aerosol bottles.

Not 100% sure but I think this is the same as whipping twine $9.95 for 100m at Whitworths in sydney but I'm pretty sure you cold get it at other marine supply stores. We use to fix are sails after the kids usually cause rips doing something dopey in high wind. Its really strong and does the job.
