Eosin

Post by Labbie »

I have not made this up in years. Due to the fact we recycle our Eosin, as we only use it for Showing movement in water in plants. Made some up today, and it came out RED, I always thought it was a bright orange colour, perhaps ours has been dulited a little too much??????

The substance was a brown colour, and I only used tap water.????

Hi, I use this recipe:

1g eosin powder
100ml tap water
And dissolve.

It is red/orange colour, and the darker it is the better colour trace thought the plant stems.
Did u just changed your user name??

Maybe it depends on which Eosin you use to begin with, Sue.

Last time I made up Eosin Yellowish, alcohol based, which is a deep flouro orange colour. Like you, our previous stock (made up before my time) was red. Could that have been made using Eosin Bluish, which we also stock?

We always used to use eosin, but now use food colouring and seems to do the same job, and maybe cheaper?

We've also been using food colouring, various colours to show water movement with great results!

Curious to know what you all do....
Do you add a few drops of 1% eosin to beaker of water with celery or do you place celery in 1% eosin only?
We have added the stain to the celery already in water and it seems to work OK.

We tend to add the 1% eosin to water but depending on the teacher I still prefer to split the celery up the middle (like two legs?!) and put it two testubes of different food colours, it is more interesting. However I found that cochineal didn't work as well as red food dye. Is it cause it"s bug juice?????
