Marine studies would like to set up a tank with yabbies and penny turtles, I assume we have to have some sort of license for this. Does anyone know where the science dept gets this from and any idea of the cost.

Hi Estelle,
If you want to keep turtles you will need to obtain a license from Nat. Parks & Wildlife. They have various categories of license depending on which species you want to keep. If the turtle you mentioned is a common one it's probably a Class 1 licence. From memory it's gone up to $60.
After you get the licence you then need to complete a return every year to say what species you have, where you got them from ( listing the license #'s of the keepers you purchased them from) & any you may have sold or swapped. If any have come from interstate, and import/export permit also has to be obtained & that's ~$25 for each animal.
As was mentioned, you also have to have Animal Welfare accreditation & they want to know absolutely everything.
Hope I haven't put you off but it may be easier just to bring one in every now & then to show the students if you have access to a keeper.
