Dry Ice

Post by Slartibartfast »

Have just sourced dry ice from BOC gases at West Gosford but not sure how much to purchase for a cloud chamber experiment. It's sold at $7.45 per kilo in pellet form. I suppose if I get too much I could always blow up a PET bottle in this lovely sunshine we're having. Have to warn the neighbours though!!

Found this great website also with school links:

Richard, we get ours from BOC up here - they are always happy to donate it to us for experiments, especially at the end of their delivery week, when they otherwise are throwing it away!

Ours is an old cloud chamber that looks like a 1L thermos flask. If yours is similar, you'd need about 500g, and probably not use all of it.

I take a 2L thermos, which holds one of their scoops. We use the leftover for dems with classes :w00t:

Thanks for the great website
Liz

I always get our dry Ice from BOC in Tamworth.

I take a 6 can esky ( it now has a dry ice safety label on it which they supplied) over with me and most times they fill it for me for nothing.

I have no idea how much weight wise that is, but it is enough for the cloud chamber thing leaving some left over to play with.

The kids love it put into a bucket of hot water and detergent!

As noona said I have one of thoes insulated bottles with large screw lid with pop-off pourer everytime I go down they say that would hold two Kilos but they fill it up and charge me for 1Kg
and by storing insulated bottle in freezer have for 3 days 2 nights.
Then go into all science classes with a pellet or two drop in a beaker of water with Universal ind. instant fog machine and watch the water turn red (carbonic acid)

Hi All,

I was just thinking Richard, I will give you a head start when launching your PET bottle, so as to see whether your bottle will go higher than my rockets.

I will keep an eye out for any test fragments...

Cheers,

Robb.....

We get our dry ice from Fiegerts, the local ice making company at Asquith. Use it for a bit of drama on open nights. (They sell it but don't make it themselves.)

Hi, I know this is late regarding the Parramatta dry ice question, but I get mine from BOC at Kings Park - on Vardys Road.

Regards,
Carol.
