Anybody know what a Naket is??

Post by kimm »

Hello all,
in the last week we received our order from Serrata - amongst it was our specimen - "Brains of 5 different classes of vertebrate" specimen. The accompaning piece of paper in chinese and english lists them as Rabbit, Pigeon, Naket, Toad, Crucian. We have had many amusing conversations on what a Naket is but none that we can tell the students with a straight face. I have googled it and it just comes up with sites with "naked" in their titles. :whistling2:
Any Naket specialists out there??

"Snake" perhaps? Find a person who can read Chinese and ask them! Just be careful, if you go to a restaurant and ask the staff they may serve it up to you! :cheesy:

Barbara,
Your Grandma is right, but I didn't think that the kids would do that at Hunter Christian School. We insist that our kids at least wear a HAT! \:D/

I found a verse from James Joyce "Finnegans Wake", BookIII Episode 4
...So,nat by night by naught by naket , in those lousy days gone by....
Now tell me what that means and we have a definition of NAKET

Robb, there were a few 'game birds' down the Beer & Brawl hotel last Friday, I'll see you there tonight eh! And as Ian suggests I might even wear a hat! Couldn't hurt our chances :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

Ian.. Not only do our kids have an interesting attire, but I JUST heard the teacher say to a student "Put your four legs on the floor and pay attention!"
or maybe that was "Put your FORE legs on the floor........"

Hmmmm. None of the kids thought that was unusual.
Or maybe that was the whole point they are KIDS!

Sorry to get on your goat.....it IS Fri afternoon & I am a goat on the edge...Shrek! :w00t:

Hey aren't you a helpful mob!!! remind me not to ask a question on a friday afternoon again!!
Anyway I am off to my local chinese restaurant to ask to translate and maybe even order dinner, and - yes- I will be on the look for a game bird wearing a Hat. cheers.

Rob - a little concerned about it being a game bird as they already have listed pigeon - so not doubting your explanation but more so their translation to english.
so - thanks all of you for your help (i think) - if nothing else - you made me laugh.

Hey Kim,

I know I said this already, but a "Naket" must be a reptile because all the other classes of vertebrate were already represented - bird, amphibian, fish, mammal. A crucian is a type of carp.

Thanks Kristin
sorry I had taken your thoughts on board - we were thinking it had to be a reptile as well - possibly snake, just didn't want to write it off as a possible translation error without checking with the 'mob' first.
appreciate everyones input - life was never meant to be serious - that is for sure.

Well, just goes to show how interesting Science is - I just read about Chinese serving you up snake, being game, being naket!, grandma's words of wisdom, wearing undies and hats, Finnegan's Wake (a book), Beer & Brawl (a hotel, obviously), fore legs, four legs, goats on the edge, naket goats, the ASX, and Friday arvo. And the funny thing is, or maybe it should be worrying, I seemed to follow the story each step of the way, with all its diversons and side-tracks. Great reading. Thanks for that, made my day!
