I'm a little bit excited to try the recipe. I used up all my ampoules ages ago and have been using the substitute chemicals. I think it's an Iodine solution (or crystals) in cyclohexane and cyclohexene. I am about to ask the chem teachers if we're going to do that prac this year right now!!!

Check the following http://www.practicalchemistry.org. Look for the standard techniques section and you will find a procedure for handling liquid bromine in ampoules and making up bromine water. It is a Nuffield Foundation site with science related information.

I prepare Bromine water by adding H2O2 and a few drops H2SO4 to NaBr soln or KBr soln. Easy and safe. Its in CSIS Appendix F.
