Lab Coats Vs Aprons

Post by smeee »

We are looking at buying aprons for junior science as they are easier to launder and store and keep lab coats for senior Biology and Chemistry.
What are your thoughts ??

When doing pracs all students wear lab coats 7 -12. When junior students visit they also wear them.
I wash them each term and after dissections or if I notice they are stained, in my spare time :cheesy:

We only use aprons and they get washed at the end of term if I have the time. I wash them after dissections also.

we have aprons - I asked for them for students especially Senior students. They are white rubber/plastic coated ones, one class got the black cast off rubber ones from the technics people.
They hang in each room, and are NEVER used.
I have never washed them! can you wash plastic coated aprons? They are SO heavy.

We use LDPE disposable aprons. They come in 100/box $12. Quite frankly I got tired of washing aprons that had been used (put on) and not dirty, but who could tell because they were old and stained anyway....

Lab coats here for anyone who uses the labs. They get washed once a term or if soiled (e.g. after dissection) We use the home ec washing facilities during student holiday times.

I have just started buying the LDPE disposable aprons which I only use for dissections. Lab coats go to the laundrette twice a year which we now budget for. In between I clean the odd dirty lab coat in the machine I share with the home eco department. I used to wash the lot in it but could only do 6 or 7 a time, it's just a small front loader. What a drag that was!!

We use lab coats here. The students buy their own and bring them to class, if they forget it they don't do the prac.

We have rubber-type aprons on hooks in every room - and no one uses them. I suggest that teachers use them - but they don't even suggest it to students. We have the safest spider population in Australia - as they live among the aprons.

Students have never worn lab coats nor aprons for classes here.
Seniors helping with the making of Liquid Nitrogen Ice-cream wear the lab coats once maybe twice a year.
Drama students borrow them for a play/skit they are performing.
