Science Week

Post by Kathryn »

Hi everyone

I am starting to plan ahead for Science Week in August. The theme this year is "energy evolution”, based on the UN’s International Year of Sustainable Energy For All. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for experiments across the school - from primary to senior students?

Re the evolution part all I can think of is candle power. How much light can be generated using a candle and some mirrors? How many candles or mirrors equal a 25watt globe? And maybe hook up multimeters to an assortment of light sources ie 6vt, leds and a solar one etc. Or you could generate heat from a flame, the sun and electricity and do a cost/time/convenience analysis. Melting an ice cube or heating some water. Racking my brain and I cant think of anything else other than the Great Power Debate which is more about the environment I think. good luck!

You could have a look at this website. It is just about energy really but on the Science projects page it had some experiments to do.

Hey Nicky, that project page is cool. I wish I knew about it when my kids were at school. 8-)

Try ASTA (Australian Science Teachers Association). When I was at CONASTA a few years ago they gave out some copies of an Astronomy booklet for use in Science Week that year. It was a brilliant publication with pracs for all ages, some with 'extension tasks' for brighter/faster students. I got the impression that they produce one each year and teachers who are members should receive a copy. Ask your teachers if they have one (they quite possibly don't look at it because it is too much for them, but don't think about it being useful for you) or look up their website.

Maybe the guy who made this should have added a slice of bread and made a spinning helicopter.
