Hi Katie,
There is the old "Black Can and White Can" one where you either paint some soft drink cans white and some black and put a thermometer into each can and stick them in the sun for a while. The black can should get hotter. The thermometer should be suspended so that it does not touch the sides or bottom of the can. This can be done by putting a thermometer size hole through a cork and putting the cork/thermometer into the hole in the can.

You can get little solar panels from Jaycar that the kids could use to power little motors, or LED lights, etc.

For a dem, put a glass cover over a box. put the covered box and a non covered box in the sun for a while and measure any temperature difference. (also demonstrates greenhouse effect!)

For a project, the kids could build a solar sausage cooker. make a large parabolic mirror out of cardboard, covered with alfoil, and make a sausage rotisserie at the focal point of the mirror.

Another project idea might be to make a model solar hot water heater from black sprinkler hose in a black box with a glass lid and use a PET bottle for a storage vessel above the bow to set up a thermosyphon.

There will be other labbies with other (and better) ideas, but I hope this helps a bit

Cheers

Ian :-)

There is a really good video - "Bang Goes the Theory - the Human Power Station" which shows how much push bike power it takes to run a house. It really puts power use into perspective!! It was on TV last year and I caught the end of it. I had our librarians track it down.
