Peanut Prac - Year 8 Energy

Post by laurena »

We have been using the experiment "The Burning Peanut" for our Year 8 energy topic, however we have been finding more and more students suffer from nut allergies, therefore we have deleted this experiment, but have not been able to come up with another experiment that is as adequate or better then the peanut experiment. I welcome any ideas!
Thanks

We use corn chips!
As a treat, we allow the students to take some to eat as they leave the lab.
TIP: Cover the corks in foil so the students dont burn the corks
:D :D :D They love free food!

We use bacon due to the fat content and the fact that it is more easily ignited and keeps burning.

We have used Twisties, Corn Chips, Pringles, dried apple and even salami for this prac. They get to really see how much oil is in the foods that they love to eat. 8O

Does any one have any "healthy" foods they use as a comparion for the students??

We also have taken peanuts out of all pracs - we use the corn chips and twisties but did not htink of dried apple - that got me thinking if there are "healthier" foods that can be used where a result is achieved.

We do corn chips, and we compare the energy output of "full strength" cheese, so-called 60% less saturatedfat, and home brand.
Cheers, K 8-)
