gelatine jelly, recipe needed please

Post by Jen1 »

hi all,
I have to make up a lot of jelly today and rather than use commercial packets I was thinking perhaps i could just use gelatine powder but I'm not sure how much i will need per 100ml so that it sets. And I assume I would have to use hot water like making nomal jelly???

Oh and I have powdered gelatine as bought from sigma
Any info appreciated
cheers

I can't imagine that it would be too different, but I have some McKenzie's Gelatine, which uses 1 tablespoon (14g) into 100mL of hot water - I've used boiling water from the kettle as you do with flavoured jelly. You mix until the gelatine is dissolved then add this to 400mL liquid (room temperature is fine). You can add a bit more gelatine if you need a firmer jelly.

Thanks Merilyn,
I have made some up using 1/2 a tablespoon per 100ml and it is setting a little bit but I think I will have a go now with some at your recommended ratio.

Thanks Merilyn,
I made two batches, one at your strength and one half that strength and both have worked fine.

My Physics teacher has had me make up Petri dishes of Jelly for a refraction prac exam. I just use the ratio on the Gelatine pack (Davis or McKenzies) But, what else do you use Gelatine for? My mum used to make a lovely "Spanish Cream", but not for classroom consumption. Does it work for cultures, like Agar plates?

Unfortunately not :-(
It would be a cheaper alternative if that were the case, but gelatine does not set hard enough and has a lower melting point.
