Molarity of Acetic Acid HELP

Post by Carolyn »

Need to make up exactly 0.085 molar of Acetic Acid. Bottle is 60.05 MW. Book says 1molar = 58ml to make up to 1litre.
Do I have the correct amount of 4.93 ml Acetic Acid to make up to 1 litre???????
Need to know before I start mixing Thanks

hi there a now retired chemistry teacher showed me a quick calculation for your problem.........
the amount of reagent as shown in the manual multiplied by the concentration neededmutiplird by 0.1mutiplied by volume needed in ml and diveded by 1000.
this formula has become my bible and it works every time for me

If you are given that the volume required to make up a litre of 1 mol L-1 solution is 58mL, multiplying this figure by the concentration required (0.085) will give you the amount required to make up 1 litre of 0.085 mol L-1 solution, in this case 4.93mL. No further calculation is required if you want a litre of solution.

If you want a smaller volume – say 250mL, the same above applies, then is multiplied by the volume required in litres as follows:
58 x 0.085 x 0.25 = 1.23mL

Sounds like they are pretty fussy about accuracy, so remember the bigger the quantity you make the more accurate you will be on scale

Thanks all for your reassurance and calculations. I can now make up the solution knowing I have the right amounts. Makes the job sooo much easier.
