Hi,
Our librarian wants to grow some green crystals and I wondered if anyone has any ideas on what to use. Is copper carbonate a contender do you think, or too expensive?

Potassium aluminium sulphate - more commonly known as alum (can be purchased in chemist shop). Green dye in powder form or try green food colouring. You can buy this sort of thing in kit form (possibly Toyworld or Spotlight perhaps or a hobby shop). Nothing too obnoxious to handle.

The above site has an instruction manual you can download that takes you through the process step by step. Plus all the safety warnings to be aware of. I think for the librarian that this would be the best option and the alum crystals are quite a nice shape.

If its for the library can't you use salt or sugar and green food colouring?

The Librarian wants to enter a crystal growing competition with other Librarians and was looking for something a little different. She doesn't want to use food colouring or dye. I have passed on safety information for Mohr's Salt crystals to her.
