What electrical wire do you use

Post by kimmy »

I have finally ran out of the electrical wire that was here when I started. I now need to make up more circuit wires for alligator and banana clips. What wire do you all use and where from. I ordered some the other week and guess what was not the right thickness for what im after.
I know this sounds a very silly question but I had rolls of wire when i started in red, black, green and yellow and none of the rolls say anyting re size or order no.
Just thought id put it out there and see what you all use.
thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Kim, I have some that I ordered slightly too thick as well. Some of the other labbies were saying they've come up with a way to still use it. I couldn't quite picture what they said though, but it may not be the end of the world! Is it just that you can't thread it through the alligator clips? Or is it WAY too thick, as in like ordinarily electrical cord?

I inherited lots of rolls of wire when I came here too Kim.
Fortunately I still have lots of them, so have not been faced with this one. :coffee:

Wow Matchstick that is good news to hear! I have often looked at those but thought they would probably break too so have stuck to the cheaper hand made ones. Maybe its time to start investing in the "all in one" ones.

Kimmy,
If you have a piece of suitable wire from an existing alligator lead, just take it down to Jaycar, or a hardware store or an electrical wholesaler, and ask for some the same. If they don't have some in stock they would probably be happy to order it in specially for you if they know that you are wanting whole rolls. (saves you paying the postage that way too!)

cheers

Ian :)

Hi Kimmy
There were rolls (and rolls) of thin insulated wire here when I started and it breaks off very easily. Finally I have started putting 2 strands of it together, twisting them for the full length, and connecting the 4mm plugs or alligator clips to the bare ends (twisted together). None of these have come loose.
