Hi Tracy,
When you read the document you will see H2SO4 and sugar is a teacher dem in the fumehood.
Banned expts is a loose title as some can be done in a fumehood by the teacher.
The document pre-dates CSIS by several years.
Our school does not have scanning ability...I know, unbelievable!!!

Do you have a scanner at home? You could scan it and email it to yourself at work then post it up :)

I am very surprised to see that the H2SO4 and sugar prac is actually banned given that in CSIS appendix F this reaction is described as ''useful" but to do it in a fume cupboard as a demo.

Lorrae,
the document states that sugar and acid can be done as a teacher dem in the fumehood...this applies to others on the sheet.
Everyone please read carefully and remember the document pre-dates CIS by about 15yrs.....I have been a lab assistant for 19yrs.
Use the document as a giude and remember your HOD can over rule however when he does you are not responsible for any disasters

I'm awaiting a reply from Richard Morante. He's the Senior Curriculum Adviser for Science yrs K-12 in NSW for the DET. If there is a current document available (for NSW) regarding what we can and cannot do then I'm sure he'd know of it. I'll post it as soon as anything is made available.

The DET and Workcover NSW websites have nothing that I can see.

Surely it would be some where in the CSIS, Richard? If the chemcial is banned then any experiments with the substance in is also banned. Surely, or perhaps I am on the wrong track???

True, but I'm looking at it from the point of view of things we are allowed to keep that cannot be used together in a banned experiment. CSIS will not show this.

In QLD and WA a manual that is endoresed by the deaprtments of education (in WA the health dept and minning dept. also have a hand in it) has stated in them banned substances and pracs. Do the other states not also have such a manual?

Hi Judy and others,

Please can I have a copy of the list too? If it's not too much trouble  I know there's been a million requests! Attn: Meg Fax No. 63327338 Thanks in advance :-)

Was just talking about this very topic with staff in my department yesterday arvo. We were debating what the official word is on the 'cheek cells on a microscope slide prepared by students' prac is. Does anyone know whether this prac is offically banned for health reasons (and where I can find documentation of it) or is it just up to individual schools discretion and risk assessments?

Cheek cells stained with methylene blue under a scope are just so pretty  :wink2:

Hi Meg,

Do you have a copy of the Chemical Safety in Schools folders??
Check out Section 3.2.4(b) page 29. It says "Experiments with fresh human blood or fresh humanb tissue eg. cheek cell smears should not be undertaken."
Hope this helps

Lorrae

Ps did you do the course at the AIS about OH&S late last year??

Thanks Sue and Lorrae,

I will direct my teach's to the 'official word'! I had my suspicions that it was a no-go :-(

I haven't done the OHS course yet, I'm enrolled for one on 2nd April, and am still wading my way through CSIS in depth, as until now I have only had a 'basic working knowledge' of the package.

Looking forward to feeling a lot more qualified soon! (Nine days in the job and counting, so far no major disasters!)

Cheers,
Meg
