Muilt skill's etc, do you get moved around, 6 months in Library, or one term in Cooking, etc. The job in Science is not being done properly, due to the fact the lady sent to Science. "DOES NOT WANT TO BE THERE"

We are a very small school, so we have to be multi-talented. I am based in Science but lend a hand anywhere I am needed. I consider myself to be the Science lab Assistant, though, no matter where I am in the school. :giggle: :wink2:

Once upon a time I was used by admin to sit in the office and answer the phone while the secretary had lunch. Eventually the HOD said that my time was really required in the science labs so they found an alternative office sitter.
The only moving I do now, is moving myself between the middle school campus and the senior campus. Some days I appear a little demented because I have moved too many times between the two. The Botanical gardens cuts the school in half and rather than walk in the humidity and heat over what is called The Gully, I wear the tyres out on my car instead.

Yes. As our numbers have dropped so has my time in Science. I am currently classed as 50% science and 50% Admin.
I don't mind the split although at times it has been interesting when I find myself running betweeen the two for various reasons.

No. I am employed as the Science Laboratory Technician and this is where I stay. I am not employed as Admin staff, or Library technician or Teachers aid (although I am on the same pay scale as them) You cannot work as a school lab tech in this state wothout having formal qualifications.

For 6 years I did 27.5 hours science and 10hrs home ec (shpping etc). This was despite I have B.App.Sc and worked in industry laboratories/processing.
The last 4 years been back in Science permanently - can't see that changing again - although 50% of what I do now is WHS (whole site, not just labs)

Missed the poll but no I don't get moved around. I was employed as a lab assistant because of my background in science. I have never worked in anything but labs (since leaving uni anyway) so wouldn't feel comfortable anywhere else. I may help out doing other things, occasionally, if asked nicely  , but never moved for any period of time.

Our new acting School Admin Manager ( my superior in DET), recently called a meeting to inform us that we would all be rotating positions every 6 months. When I asked if that included science she said " Oh well you're a bit of a specialist! so mabey you could offer training to the office staff who are interested". Does that mean I could get paid as a specialist sometime soon??? the office girls are not rushing to science to learn.

You are NOT required to train any one at all. It is the Head teachers job, do not take my word for it, it is in the CSIS. From time to time their are training courses, mainly in Sydney, I are not too sure where you are.
I have 4 different assistants each week, It nearly did my head in remembering who knew what.

WHEN will schoolmanagement get 'IT"?
We are no longer just a casual body to be slotted in.
With all the legal ramifications involved in our job, we ARE specialists, and it is time management understod that - they are so behind the 8-ball !!
If I was an office lady I woudl refuse to come to Sceince - WHS issues as well as legal issues of handling and dispensing chemicals

i got moved once. to the print room for a month. hated very day of it. I cried a lot in the first week. (yes I can't believe i cried over it!).
I didn't know what I was doing, the machines always beeped and the teachers were worse than just the science teachers.
I haven't been moved since, and there hasn't been talk of it either. phew.

When I started 4 years ago, I was 50/50 science and library then went full time to the print room and now am full time in science. BUT at the discretion of the SAM, can be pulled out to fill in when we are down staff. I am happy to help out when needed but don't even dream of it ever being reciprocated.... office staff are tooooooooo busy. They tried multitasking but it proven too hard to get a handle on the various jobs, especially when you are given very little instruction and then get yelled at or talked about for being incompetent.

I move around between 3 departments - science, food tech and office. Science and food tech have always been a full time workload however over the last couple of years I have been required to do office duties 1 1/2 days a week and also called upon to do office time if any SAOs are away. The science/food tech work load has not changed so juggling a full time workload part time can make for an interesting day  My bug bear is that the SAO who works in the Library (whose workload is lighter) is never called upon to help out. I am the only SASS trained in science and while the SAM is big on us learning each others roles, no one has been learning mine. On the upside, I guess that makes me indispensible :D

I'm going on long service leave Thurs 1st Dec. for the rest of the year. I'm being called in within that time for an W.H.&S Audit. A lady in the canteen is taking my place, she will be coming for one day only to spend with me, before hand and will have one day trial without out me before I go. How do you think the poor women will go. Didn't realise we made the chemicals up!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I feel so sorry for the lady replacing you and also you having to come back after your LSL. It's just not fair, but seems to happen far too often. During the September holidays last year, I broke my arm very close to my elbow, so it wasn't able to be plastered (only a heavy bandage) so my doctor wouldn't let me return to work until it was healed.
There was an option to put someone from the office who had replaced me for a few weeks, a few years back (by the way she has a BSc) in the position but she was too important in the office. Also, there is another woman that works 3 days per week who had worked with me previously (HT teacher was happy to have me covered 3 days a week). BUT, a casual that had never worked in Science was put here, you can imagine what I came back to, and as soon as I said something to the SAM I was in the wrong, so it was easier for me to say nothing, and hope that I never have to have any time off while I'm employed here because I take a lot of pride in my work (as we all do).
