Dear All - Welcome back for 2009! Anyone using this Risk assessment produced by Phillip Crisp? We subscribed late last year to see what it was all about! (Still waiting!!!) I would be interested in comments, good or bad. Is it helpful or does it just create extra unnecessary work for the lab tech, we are currently using the format from the CSIS manual and I feel this is adequate, do others agree? Jude

Hi judy, We subscribed to the site last year and have been using it on occasion. It is good, but the problem is the saving of the documents. We wanted to subscibe so that we may be able to save them on disk instead of using so much paper, but we have problems with this area of it so we email them to me and I have a file in my email account that I so far have been storing them. I also have teachers that are printing it off, I think it is great, But my staff are not really into doing the risk assessment this way. Habits are hard to change, But I have patience.
The assessment comes out more in depth than the csis one, which is good.

Again can you tell me what you use the risk assessments for my brain has gone on holidays and I have not herd about having to do risk assessments for anything ???????

Noona you are so right, but private & Cath school I do believe have to do them. Its only DET schools that do NOT.

As you said maybe it for non Dept school as far as I know we don't have to do them.

P.S. did you get a filer about the Science course the only thing is you have to have a new working in science manual and as far as I know the CD was wrong ??????

You need to tell the it an OH&S issue and that in CSIS package they must were closed in shoes if doing a prac just like the students
The other thing you could do is ring work cover and ask them and to sen you some info

Page 10 3.2 science, not sure which vol though, as See section 1.9.1.6. for information on footwear. Quote from page 10, Where indicated by a risk assessemnt, the wearing of safety footwear is mandatory. End of quote.

Thanks everyone, but tell me is it mandatory if they are in Science Laboratories but doing theory???? that's their main arguement, however they still duck into the prep. room and pinch equipment for so called theory lessons.

The principal here said we have to wear covered in shoes and if we choose not to and something happens then you don't get compensation or work cover ect. So let them know it is their choice but how will they feel when they are off work without the $$$$

My H.T has a question. Is that rule for just the Science Areas, TAS or all areas including eg., English? He feels it should be so, it's compulsory for the kids, other teachers come into our area to do relief lessons, although aren't allowed to do prac. Any ideas?

The CSIS package states that Science, TAS, must have closed in shoes. The PSA have said, the rest of the sao's do not come under this rule. Teacher's SHOULD wear closed in shoes, incase they are asked to work in Science. If they are not trained in Science, they can not do experiments, as they are not covered by insurance.
