Natural gas bottles for science labs

Post by curie »

Hi, for those of you not on town gas, can anyone tell me if we should have a cage around our gas bottles to prevent access by students? I sent an email to workcover but got directed to the relevant Australian standard, which I can't access.
Thanks.

I believe that you do - our TAS department had to put a cage around their cylinders.

It would make sense. Just looking at it from a risk assessment point of view (without reading the standard) you would want the cylinders isolated from the students.

We have 2 HUGE gas bottles, both enclosed within locked fences, in 2 different areas of the school.
They also have a sign on the fences warning there are 2 bottles in connection, turning one lot off is not enough, they have to go to the back of the school and turn the other off to work on the lines.

I have locked cages on all my gas bottles. Your gas supplier may be able to advise about security for your bottles or a registered plumber who is certified to work with gas.
