Egg Incubator

Post by macca » 03 Feb 2020, 11:29

Hi brains trust,

I'm aware the laws are different for each state, however in NSW can we have a Egg incubator for hatching chickens and other pracs., re fertilized eggs to the point of heart beat, then??

We are not an Ag school, do we have to abide by the Animals in Schools ledgislation and require a Animal Welfare Officer? your input would be greatly appreciated I'm being told we can!!!

Cheers

Any school that keeps invertebrate animals needs to comply with Animals in Schools policy. The eggs is an interesting question! Might be best to contact DET. There are contact details on the Animals in Schools website. My gut feel is you probably don't need to as long as the eggs aren't being hatched - but there could be some moral battlegrounds looming in your future with some students/parents. Best to contact the liaison officer first and check that what you are doing is okay.

fertilized eggs to the point of heart beat, then?? then cracking into a sterilised jar!!
we aren't a DET school the moral battleground is what worries me. Other teachers are already horrified, this is how they expect to get around the animals in school ledgislation, (not yet an animal).

Not sure if I can have any part of it.

I agree with you Macca - it is something even worse than I ever did at school and I went to an ag high school in the late 70s early 80s and we had to do some pretty bad things! Definitely get in touch with the DET Animals in Schools person - all schools have to abide by these policies and the DET person will help you regardless of which school system you work in.
What year group is this for?
My teachers here have all shook their heads in horror. Definitely an ethics problem going on ie when does an animal become an animal?? Plus, they've all said the teacher is opening up a minefield with parents! So call up that contact person first thing this morning.

We have hatched chicken eggs and duck eggs, fraught with heart ache and disappointment, so we got a proper incubator for hatching, NEVER DELIBERATELY KILLING THEM, NOT OK. We don't do it atm but we (me) cried a little bit when they got half way and would die, then we gave them a proper burial, it's brilliant when they hatch, but a lot of work. We do zebra fish with VESKI to see heartbeats etc. Look it up, great experiment. The fish are see thru".

I've passed on higher, as I'm not being told the whole story, because it would be known I would take it further. Either way I will not be having anything to do with it. Thanks everyone

That sounds horrific. Good on you for not having anything to do with it. I suspect that without your help, it will be too much effort for the teachers - they won't want to do all the prep and cleanup!

I have the support of two other teachers who will be refusing to do it, and are willing to take further. It was to be done with the entire yr.10 under Genetics.

I'll let you know if anything happens.

Thanks again everyone.
