St Vincent's College -1 Rockwall Cres - Potts Point, is looking for Science Lab Technician from 13th July 2015 to 17th October 2015, to work full time 38 hours perweek , 8am - 4pm in term time.

ROLE TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN


REPORTING TO: The Principal
and on a daily basis to the Head of Science

BASIC ROLE PURPOSE:

The Laboratory Technician supports and promotes the aims and philosophy of the College. The Laboratory Technician assists the Head of Science in maintaining the Science Laboratories to ensure that the learning needs of all students are met and enhanced.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Technician is accountable to the Principal, and responsible to the Head of Science on a day to day basis.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. The Laboratory Technician contributes to the religious dimension of the college by:

1.1 ensuring that the learning and administrative environment supports Catholic teaching and values;

1.2 encouraging other members of staff to incorporate this in their world view;

1.3 upholding the values of Catholic Education through one’s attitude and example.



2. The Laboratory Technician contributes to the general well-being of the staff by.

2.1 upholding the good name of the school and of each staff member;

2.2 assisting in general school activities for special occasions;
2.3 showing tolerance, compassion and understanding to other staff members and giving support if needed.

3. The Laboratory Technician supports the Head of Science by:

3.1 maintaining a register of Risk Assessments for Preparation methods;
3.2 ordering materials and chemicals required by the Science Department, in consultation with the HOD;
3.3 daily maintenance and require of equipment for provision to classes
3.4 maintaining the chemical store in accordance with the hazardous Substance Regulations, including correct labelling of chemicals;
3.5 ensuring DET colour coding, banned and recycling compliance;
3.6 setting up and maintaining the materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) register;
3.7 cataloguing and maintaining the Chem Watch Chemical Database;
3.8 maintaining a computer database of all equipment;
3.9 maintaining an inventory of all laboratory chemicals;
3.10 ordering and balancing of Science department petty cash;
3.11 seeking Professional Development opportunities to enhance knowledge of current best practices.

4. The Laboratory Technician supports all members of the Science staff in their teaching by:

4.1 preparing materials and chemicals required for practical lessons, assessment tasks, competitions and projects.
4.2 purchasing everyday materials required for practical lessons from local shops;
4.3 assisting Science staff in setting up risk assessments for all practical experiences involving hazardous substances and alerting staff to risks;
4.4 ensuring glassware and equipment in laboratories are clean and correctly stored;
4.5 covering books;
4.6 maintaining a document for the ordering of equipment for lessons.


The Laboratory Technician carries out any other tasks as designated by the Principal.
