If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to have a peek at this famous booklet.....

Re: Iron II Sulfate
I always use ferrous ammonium sulphate - this doesn't oxidise in solution to the brown ferric species. Stores longer and doesn't need to be made up immediately before use.

Re: WHS Training
I'm down to my last unit (there are 10 in total). I really enjoyed the course, but found there is a lot of overlap between WHS units. I was specifically wondering if anyone had do the unit I'm on now as it is driving me nuts..... BSBSUS301A - Implement and Monitor Sustainable Work Practices. Definit...

I'm SSO3. I would expect you to be an SSO2. How many students at your school? Are you fulltime (37.5hpw)?

Re: New Labs - starting from scratch
Thanks for the input, Tuesday. 6-8 pracs a days on an easy day? Our teachers have slacked off over this year and I don't normally see more than 5 or 6 pracs a week (much to the disgust of the Science Co-ordinator who is trying to push for more practical work)! Not that I mind, as for the last 2 term...

Re: New Labs - starting from scratch
I know most of you guys are in holiday-land already, but to follow up on my first question, I was wondering how many labs / storage-prep areas you have, how many students at your school and how many do science? We have 950 students on site (yrs 8-12 only), about 700 doing science (600 juniors and 10...

In SA...my salary equates to $34.90 per hour for a 75 hour fortnight. I work 48 weeks per annum with 4 weeks paid leave.

New Labs - starting from scratch
Hi All We are in the position of relocating our science department to a new purpose-built facility on our current site and wonder what people suggest as non-negotiable requirements (or even dream items) for a new facility. At the moment it's all about wish lists - so I'd be interested in people's re...

Re: Wood Splint / Taper
She showed me on a uk website of science supplies for education...looks like skewer length bits of wood to me.....comes in a pack of about 1000. Gave her pop sticks today and told her to get used to what we do in Australia. I just know she's going to send off to the UK for a bundle of sticks, becaus...

Re: Wood Splint / Taper
I've been here 15 years using both paddle pop stick and skewers but we have a new Science co-ordinator who came in from Ireland, and she thinks these 'simple' devices are not suitable.

Wood Splint / Taper
Hi
What do people use to test gases - hydrogen / oxygen etc? Do use use proper taper / wood splints or do you use popsticks or skewers?
Does anyone know where I can purchase proper wood splints to use as tapers?

Re: Do you get moved around????????
For 6 years I did 27.5 hours science and 10hrs home ec (shpping etc). This was despite I have B.App.Sc and worked in industry laboratories/processing.
The last 4 years been back in Science permanently - can't see that changing again - although 50% of what I do now is WHS (whole site, not just labs)

Re: Do you help with Science budget???????
Please keep it coming folks, I see we are a busy lot, spreedsheet, etc, orders, etc. THank you so much. Some one today, said I was the ONLY one in AUstralia who did this. Definitely not the only one! If I didn't do it - we'd have nothing, as our Co-ordinator leaves it all to me to research, locate,...

I'm the exact opposite...I keep track and tell our Co-ordinator when we are starting to run out!mazcheck wrote:I help spend our science budget but don't have an input into the forming of it. The HOD keeps tabs and tells me when we are starting to run out.

Re: Urgent help Required- Australian Standards for lab floor
I found this useful document though which I thought was very interesting. http://www.ltav.org.au/labcon2003_OHS_Lab_Design_2002.pdf I definitely found this interesting, especially the section on Classroom Configurations (pp26-30). I have 6 labs, 5 of which are arranged as on p 28 and 1 arranged ass...
