Re: New safety directions with dissection gear

I have sent an email to Phil Crisp to ask him where i find the information/regulations that he spoke about at the conference. I have enough to do without this added silly extra - we did it for a week. we took them from dishwasher, sterilized them in disinfectant then packed them into freezer bags in...

Re: New safety directions with dissection gear

Curie - I do also - I agree with you - it is a total waste of energy as far as I can see.. so IF it is not a regulation OR what we HAVE to do then I dont want to do it at all

New safety directions with dissection gear

From the conference with Phil Crisp, we learnt that we should disinfect all the equipment BEFORE we put it out into the class. Are any of you doing that? It is such a waste of time that I wonder if it is really a new regulation , or is just his own preference? ANyone have any ideas about the correct...

Re: how often do you clean chem stores?

We have an insect problem. There is a metal beam the goes right through the length of the building and it is a higway for ants and other insects. This makes it a happy hunting ground for spiders. Every morning my desk is covered with dead and dying insects. That is annoying enough, but what really g...

Risk Assess - Legal Issue with signing

A teacher brought to our attention that when we all sign the RiskAssess documents - teachers and Laboratory personnel - we are signing and committing ourselves legally to this statement: I have assessed the risks associated with performing this experiment in the classroom on the basis of likelihood ...

Re: Acids on carbonates

Have you lots of birds? I lost a whole batch of seedling lettuce to rosellas and cockatoos - they pull them right out of the ground .. and I lost all my kangaroo paws to white cockatoos - I watched them pull them out of the ground, turn them over and feast on the roots.. I have just set up a hydropo...

Re: Chemical Store "odours"

my exhaust fan goes 24/7 - and yet there are still odours. In holidays I push all the trolleys in to the store rooms so the cleaner can do the prep room floors. I have learnt NEVER to leave anything on the trolleys that may rust. so even if no odours apparent - there are fumes.

Re: Autoclave

I use a domestic pressure cooker I bought from Aldi... but from teh safety Course a week ago apparently that is not good enough and we shoudl use a pressure cooker that shows what the INTERNAL pressure is- and autoclave bags.. I haven't found a cheap pressure cooker that complies.

Chemwatch labels - if the right hand side has too much information on it, then I print that part up separately and put it on the BACK of the dropper bottle, leaving the front label clearer with larger font.

Oh dear - please do not leave labeling until last! We have nearly 3,000 dropper bottles here and we made it a project to wash them refill them and relabel them with GHS labels - it took us weeks! even to relabel bottles.. think about it . Say you have a tray of 16 dropper bottles work out the time i...

Placarding on Buildings

How can I work out if I need to placard storage locations at the school. I am thinking that, even if there is not enough material in a store area to need , legally, a placard, it may still be a good idea so that Emergency Personnel can immediately find where items are stored.. Except that also indic...
