Re: Cleaning Bunsen burners

I just use a piece of nichrome wire to clean out the little hole in the gas jet part of the bunsen. The inside of the barrel I clean with a wiry test tube brush.

Re: Quadrats?

THanks for your replies, I'll look at options for making some. I've been here 12 years and only twice been asked for them (by the same teachers in separate years), and those times I just attached some 1m rulers together with wingnuts. Deconstructed them back to rulers again, but it seems and accepta...

Re: Spectrometer

We could add to the datalogger sensors, that's where this discussion started. He looked at the UV-vis that went with Vernier then his mentor (the existing Chem teacher) decided that AAS would fit better with our curriculum

Re: Spectrometer

we have those as well....

I just have a teacher here in his first year who has scholarship money that needs to be spent by the end of year. He's a chemistry teacher so thought that the IEC Spectrometer for Flame Emission / Atomic Absorption looked good

Quadrats?

Hi

Does anyone out there have any quadrats? If so, did you purchase or make your own?

I have found 1 supplier of 50 x 50cm units but wonder if there is an alternative supplier, possibly selling 1m x 1m units.

Re: Science Focus users

DNA extraction seems to be relatively easy. I find that ripe banana (or frozen that has been defrosted) is best, but kiwi fruit or strawberries are also successful. At a junior level, some classes put the fruit and all the other bits and pieces (detergent, salt etc) in a ZipLock back and squish is b...

Re: Food in labs

I'm also OHS rep, however I'm a do as I say, not as I do type of guy (ie if I want to eat, I eat although it's never in the lab - I used to in the main prep room because that's where my desk was - now I'm in the science teacher's office unless I am required to be in the prep are)

Re: Stocktake program

I use Stock Controller from Omega Scientific (SA), comes preloaded with current products and price lists, and this is where I do much of my purchasing. Can edit to include all other suppliers. I have my chemical stocktake (and that of the whole school site) recorded by this method. Can also produce ...
