storage of corrosives

Hi all I have one cabinet to store corrosives. I attempt to separate by shelves the acids and bases. I also have iodine in there (double bottled in sealed plastic bags). However I am still finding that all my labels get stained brown - they would become unreadable if I left them. Is it the iodine ca...

Laboratory Equipment poster

Happy New Year Everyone

Does anyone have a supplier of a good poster of basic laboratory equipment - suitable for Yr 7's? I have found a good one at Mentone but they are charging as much for the postage as for the poster itself, so I am hoping to find a cheaper source.

Re: electrophoresis kits

Our chambers were from Southern Bio. They can only hold one gel at a time. I don't know if they sell another option. The Stemreactor chambers can hold about 6? gels at a time.

Re: Lab designs

We will be installing a new mini lab in an existing classroom. My HOD has asked if anyone on here has advice as to what material the sink should be made from - has anyone used the epoxy sinks?
Thanks

Re: electrophoresis kits

We already had the chambers, but we bought the power pack, agarose and buffer from Stemreactor. We found them excellent to work with. Jeanette came down to give a workshop to our HOD. We used it for Yr7's, Yr 10 & Yr11's during Science week. The teachers found it easy to use and the students wer...

ferric thiocyanate

Hi all
My chemistry teacher is wanting me to purchase ferric (or iron) thiocyanate. Our usual sources do not stock it and it is not even showing up on Chemsupply. Does anyone else have to get this? Apparently it is in the new curriculum.

Re: Water purifier - deioniser etc

Hi Bigmack
So does distilled water pick up CO2 more easily that tap water? Tap water always has a pH closer to 7 than our bottled water.

Re: Water purifier - deioniser etc

We have been using purchased "pure" water for some time after our reverse osmosis unit gave up. However we have found the pH of the bottled water is always low (eg between 5-6 and lower than tap water). I wonder if although it may be pure when it is bottled, it absorbs contaminates while i...

Thanks Westlab. Really appreciate our Chemtalk forum. I've used it heaps over the years and it is good to still be able to access older information as well.

Independent School. I looked up Coles homebrand. Their SDS is linked to Chemwatch hence the 12 pages (for non-acetone).

Another question about SDS

I have two 125ml bottles of nail polish remover in the cupboard for students to use when they try to get away with wearing nail polish to school (but don't get away with it!). Do I REALLY have to print out 2 copies of 12 pages of SDS?? (One copy for in here and one for the office.) Such a waste of p...

Re: amylase colour code

CSIS usually states if it is diluted. Our senior students may make up their own solution. Surely if the product has been classified as blue you would put a blue dot on it Labbie? I was told in one rego inspection that even the non toxic paints which can be used by preschoolers and even though the ar...

It just seems so inconsistent. Superphosphate, which has Danger as the signal word (skin/eye) has a blue dot.

amylase colour code

Hi all I have been going through ALL our chemicals and not only updating the SDS but also checking the colour codes I have from the old CSIS compared to RiskAssess which we now subscribe to. Lots of chemicals have changed - some going to a higher classification and some going down. One that I am fin...

Re: Pasteur Experiment

The dreaded Pasteur experiment! Do others filter your broth? My teacher likes it to be clear but it takes absolutely forever! This year I am trying Continental Stock Broth in little pottles. It says there are no preservatives but I have just read that it has thickeners and I suspect that is contribu...
