Re: Yr12 Chemistry depth study

Macca Not sure if this helps . But I bought some of this on the weekend as we hate Glyphosate .Thought the active ingredient sounded familiar :D http://ocp.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/SLASHER-Flyer-plus-QA.pdf Its Nananoic Acid . BTW , had a look around the usual Chem supply places and neither...

Oil for separation and rusting pracs

Hi Labbies , Just wondering what oil you all use ? For a separation Prac we were using Kerosene and water in a separating funnel . It was relatively easy to clean out but some teachers complained about the smell . So we tried vege oil and also Paraffin oil mixed with some water and food dye . This w...

Re: Year 12 Biology Depth Studies

Our mob just did this last term . They had to do it on fermentation . Each student had to choose something such as Kumbocha , Kimchi, sourcruit , yoghurt , cheese , bread with yeast and Sourdough etc and for the practical component they had to make one of these at home . They then bought it all in a...

Re: pressure cooker

I use some old thing that's been around for as long as me . Gets the job done .
My only suggestion would be to make sure you can fit a class set in it at a time . Mines just a bit small so I have to usually have two runs to get them all done .

Re: Chemtrix Colorimeter

good luck Julie . It's starting so sound like maybe the electronics has failed . Only other thing that comes to mind is if its been dropped . You know how sometimes if a Voltmeter gets dropped , it won't read full scale anymore because the little springs at each end of the meter get tangled . You ca...

Welcome back Julie. Bet they are very happy to have you back in Dorrigo . Sorry don't have that same colorimeter but I was wondering if maybe your tubes have gone opaque with age ? I noticed this in the instructions NOTE WHEN HANDLING CELLS AVOID FINGER MARKS ON THE LOWER PORTION OF THE CELL SINCE T...

Re: Sodium Fluoride

Hmmm ...just looked up CSIS , it's Yr11/12 . Apparently it produces highly toxic fumes of Hydrofluoric acid when added to concentrated acids . Note: Hydrofluoric acid is Banned chemical . Just looked to see if we have it . We did but it had a green sticker on it :blush2: .....fixed that . Maybe you ...

Re: chipped test tubes

I have to agree with Lyn .
Although I have fixed many a test tube , beaker and measuring cylinder that is chipped, its justvnot really worth the bother . They are so cheap in bulk ... especially test tubes .

But Labbie is on the money . More heat will help melt the glass and dull the edge .

Re: NON Trained science teacher

Our casuals and non-science staff are allowed to do pracs that don't involve chemicals at the HT's discretion based on the class and the teacher . There have been a rare few occasions where they have been permitted to use relatively safe chemicals ( salt , calcium carbonate etc ) but anything to do ...

Re: Osmosis and diffusion

Droppers won't do it .....its just not strong enough .

I give them a small stock solution of Iodine that is 10x strength ( I dilute it down for droppers )

They just carefully add it to the water in the beaker , gas jar what ever , until it is a pale brown colour . ....works everytime

Re: Vacuum Pump

Only thing I can see is that diaphragm pumps are more chemical resistant than the rocker which I think is the piston type . I guess it depends what you will use it on and the likelihood of corrosive vapours etc getting sucked into it . If it was just for bell jars and perhaps sucking some chalk thro...

Re: Physics prac - Parallel wire conductors

Hi Annette LOL I've just been asked to sort this one too .( not Pearsons but the same thing) After a bit of mucking about yesterday I found that if you use wire , it requires a lot of current , in excess of what our typical power supplies can supply before tripping out to get a visible deflection .....

Re: storage of corrosives

We don't have a cabinet for corrosives at all, they have their own bank of shelves in the chemstore. I haven't had any problems with my iodine (or anything else) staining labels. Same here melsid . We did have Iodine in a small cupboard in the prep room and there was a brown stain on the wall behin...
