Re: AUDIT

That seems crazy .I just had to do Chem stocktake for whole school ......that's another story :whistling2: I am sure the fireys would want to know about the half full 25 liter drum of petrol in the GA's fuel cupboard and the acetylene bottles in metalwork and Automotive rooms . What about the half e...

Re: transformers/powerpacks

Melded I've had two do that . One was shorted rectifier diodes and the other shorted OVP zener diodes. You can buy the bits from IEC . Being a TV tech I found it no biggy to fix but you will need a good soldering iron and solder sucker .......and about an hour. But we are probably not allowed to :-(...

Re: Banana Plugs

How tight the screw is done up is important. Too loose and the wire will pull out . Too tight and the screw will cut into the wires severing them as opposed to "biting " into them to make a connection...this causes the remaining strands to brake when tugged on . It is good to fold the stri...

Ozone Apparatus

I spotted this mystery piece in the cupboard in the Physics Lab . It has plagued me for nearly 2 years . I have even seen one at another school and asked the seasoned Labbie if they knew.what it was [-o< ....."how should I know" :cheesy: ," the only bloke that probably knew di...

Re: Ammonium Nitrate 0.1M solution

Well that makes more sense Elizabeth .
But as a DoE school are we in our rights to trust what RiskAssess says or are we still bound to interpret the CSIS as best we can .
I'm still thinking about RiskAssess but if we can't be guided by it ( due to having CSIS ), is there any point .

Re: Ammonium Nitrate 0.1M solution

Ours is Orange Dot also . 0.1M is 8g per Liter ( according to my recipe book ) so it is less than 5% solution .....Good question Kathryn ...I can't see any reason why ours is an orange Dot other than there is nothing that specifically says <5% can be a Green Dot . To my simple mind Non hazardous wou...

Re: Calcium Carbonate classification confusion

It really is silly labbie . next on the list calcium sulphate ....again nearly every supplier has it as non hazardous but chemwatch has a warning on it and several supplier MSDS link to the chemwatch SDS . I realise we must obey the CSIS , but I thought that DoE schools had to use chemwatch , hence ...

Calcium Carbonate classification confusion

Is it hazardous or not ? Chemwatch has it as Hazardous with the GHS warning and corrosive symbols . MSDS from nearly every supplier has it as Not classified as hazardous . I have Calcium carbonate powder and marble chips . Chemwatch seems to also want to lump the two as calcium carbonate . CSIS has ...

Kimmy , I'm hearing you about being over it all . Thanks for posting the Schoolbiz , it looks like what J posted HERE It is so good to Not have to re label existing stock by the end of the year . Re: asbestos mats

This is an old topic but I wonder if any new info has come to light . Last week at my other school , the HT asked me to collect all of the heat mats and dispose of them as she was convinced they were asbestos. They look exactly the same as the ones we use at this school so I bought them here . Head ...

Thanks. You all made sense. Might have to re-evaluate a few things .

A query about Phenolthalien Droppers , as this is basically all alcohol , then should they definitely need to be stored in the Flammables cupboard .

Storing Chemicals in the prep room

Recently I watched a DVD called working in science .( circa 2008) In one segment , the labbie was showing her prep room . Only thing I can think of is to minimize the risk of infection should a kid cut or stab themselves before they are presented with a tray of gore to cut up....gosh I wonder if the Metal work and woodwork rooms will have to sterilize the saws and chisels next #-o

Re: GHS Labeling

Personally I don't think the Riskassess labels satisfy the legal requirements according to that document, for original containers anyway. They may be ok for small containers going into the classrooms but the original container must include safety and first aid. It also must have manufacture / suppl...
