Re: PVA Chemistry

Hi Maree

I've attached a file with another polymer recipe. This makes the gooey slime that kids love. Initially the slime is quite wet and sticks to fingers, but it dries after a few hours - even less now that summer is finally here. Maybe try 20 mL less water and compare.

Cheers

Re: What a way to start the term!

Hi everyone, Seems like lots of us have had to deal with a freezer full of rotting, putrid-smelling flesh, myself included. Check out the following website Cheltie: http://www.electronichealing.co.uk/products/smell_buster.htm it may be a bit late to help with your current problem, but it may be wort...

Nitrogen dioxide tubes

Good morning everyone,

I've been asked to buy a pair of sealed nitrogen dioxide tubes for upper school chemistry. I made up large test tubes with bungs for this year, but would still like to purchase a couple.
Does anyone know of a supplier please.

Regards
Fran

Disposable gloves

Can I have some feedback please of how many schools supply their students with disposable gloves as a matter of course, or for most pracs. I usually supply only for dissections (squeamish lot today), potting seedlings, anything that's really messy, or if the teacher absolutely insists on having them...

Re: Records of Ethanol Usage

WA schools were required to keep a record of ethanol usage when a permit was required to purchase any quantity. Some years ago this was changed to allow the purchase of up to 5L without a permit. I don't know for sure, but I would say that if a permit is required, a record of usage is required too.

Delivery tubes

If the delivery tube is only used for experiments that don't involve heating e.g. CO2 into Ca(OH)2 produced from HCl + CaCO3, flexible straws are the way to go - especially with lower school students. Best type are Deeko Entertainers as they have a larger diameter than most. For smaller dia straws, ...

I copied the following information from the RTG website (for WA techs). This site is invaluable and well worth a look. The action of saliva on starch - another view. The standard procedure for this experiment is to react starch solution with saliva and then test for the production of sugar. As an al...

Re: Distilled water

Cash & Carry (formerly FAL) Balcatta, WA, sell Anchor distilled (deionised)water for $6.43 (ex GST) per 15L cask. The cask is the same as those used for "Chateau Cardboard" wine. Advantages are that they're cheap, portable, greatly reduce wastage and are much harder for students to con...
