Re: Magnets

You can remagnetise old magnets with the neodymium magnets. I haven't actually tried it yet, but I saw it on YouTube. Maybe it'll work to strengthen the dodgy ones too. You can only try. Yes it does work . We have a special re-magnetizer . it is a neodymium magnet moulded into a plastic handle .Jus...

Re: Chem storage in lead tray

I'm happy with it . I sometimes think we can get a bit carried away with lead Paranoia. I was raised on tank water where the roof was full of lead head nails and lead flashing . I then had lead solder running through my fingers and breathed the fumes of it everyday for 25 years . Am I sick ?? maybe ...

Re: Chem storage in lead tray

We have a couple of lead trays here that our acid solutions have always been stored in .

It's strange that yours were in a drawer though .wouldn't have thought you would fit very high bottles etc in them . Unless it was those old reagent bottles with the ground glass lids .

Re: Wooden Test tube racks

We still have dozens of wooden ones and I've wondered the same thing about contamination . I've seen at other schools what happens to plastic ones when hot test tubes are put in them . For that reason I will stick to our old wooden ones 'til further notice . AnnNos , did you sand them back to wood o...

Merilyn
Thankfully the disposals bit of CSIS has been updated on the online version.
I saw an example of this at a recent Science Assistant training where we were asked to bring our old printed manuals and compared it against the online one . This bit at least has been updated .

Re: Borosilicate Watch glasses

Thanks Ines They seem to be Soda glass .Seems that's what all our regular suppliers have . I was looking for Pyrex ( Borosilicate ) ones as we have been having a lot crack when they do a prac where they are on a beaker of water heated with a Bunsen with Ice cubes in them . HT has now decided that it...

Great idea! I would have cleaned the oxidation off the surface of the magnesium first though......should be nice and shiny Normally I do run it through some sand paper to clean it up David , but in the particular prac where it was used , we were getting unpredictable results and we put it down to i...

Re: Those Fires

We wet the place down in the morning and evacuated to Coffs Harbour as recommended by the RFS. The smoke in Coffs was chokingly thick in the morning but by lunchtime the wind was blowing offshore so it not so bad . We managed to get a tiny air-conditioned dogbox at a camping ground so we were lucky ...

Re: Bell in a vacuum

The bell disappeared from the bell jar somehow, so we put a phone in and call it. Works beautifully. We've got an oil-free pump, no brand markings on it I'm afraid. That's an awesome idea Marama T  It also shows that radio waves can travel through a vacuum too . We have an electric bell in...
