For a class of 10 groups 1 1/2 litres distilled water. Remove from heat and add 45g Agar Agar powder slowly stirring until dissolved. ChemGold also has GHS labels available as well as the safety data sheets. Type in the chemical and when the MSDS comes up select options and GHS mode is there.

Re: DOTS on Chemicals
As far as I know the Dept has not informed us about anything, especially GHS. I was speaking to someone in Sydney and was told that they would be in contact with me to answer some questions I had - possibly in 3 to 4 days. That was on 18th October.

Re: Chemwatch MSDS
Under the CSIS program the School has to have full copies of the MDSD for every hazardous and dangerous chemical on site. All others only need the mini version. If I order something - product or chemical- and the full MSDS or SDS comes it goes into the school copies (2 - 1 in the sign-on room and 1 ...

Re: CSIS online training
It's mandatory for everyone of school grounds, not just teachers. SASS, SLSOs, GA, FA, canteen supervisors, Councillors, everyone who is on the school grounds. We do Pract teachers and Interns as they do their classes here. Our CSIS register has 278 names since we started doing the training in 2000.

Re: CSIS online training
The link is the training for CSIS. At our school we had two staff members do the training then act as trainers for the whole school. In the past, this only had to be done once, then upgraded when there were changes to the OHS legislation. However, with the new WHS (Work, Health & Safety) the tra...

Re: sodium thiosulphate - and HCL
We use 250mL 0.1M sodium thiosulfate and 5mL 2M hydrochloric acid and sit it on an overhead projector. As the solution heats up the reaction goes from clear through to black as the sulfur precipitates out. Called the Sunset Reaction because of the colours. We use it to demonstrate colloids.

Re: what weird/quirky things do your teachers ask of you?
When I first started in science some years ago I was sent to get 127 condoms. When I asked the chemist if he had more than was on the shelf, he wanted to know if I was going to have a busy night.

Is that the test for presence of oxygen? We use potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide then insert a splint that has been just extinguished and in the presence of oxygen the splint re-ignites (glows)

Re: Chart storage
I used a large flat screen TV carton. Measured the width of the posters and cut. I cut the back out of the other side and slid it into the longest one. Glued it in place and painted it. A piece of flat steel on an angle goes in - holds about 80 A1 size posters. Larger ones go into a smaller flat scr...

Thanks for your help

Milli ammeters
5 burnt out milli ammeters in 2 days. Is it possible to replace the fuse wire? Has anyone repaired burnt out units successfully. Does anyone have an ammeter - milli or micro - that has a proper fuse inside that can be replaced or do you just buy new meters?

This is how I did it. Procedure 1) Place 200 ml of de-ionised water in a 500 mL beaker. Heat until the water just begins to boil. Remove the heat and stir in 8 g of powdered agar. Heat gently while stirring until the agar is evenly dispersed throughout the water. 2) Add about I ml of 0.1 M potassium...

Re: sodium polyacrylate
I was asked if we could get some but sodium polyacrylate isn't in appendix D of CSIS. When we looked at the SDS is stated that there is 'limited evidence of carcinogenic effect'. Apparently it's the dust only that is a problem. They decided to use a baby's nappy to show how it expands and not purcha...
