Re: Phenophthalein Agar Jelly

As long as you don't have it sitting outside fridge and grow bacteria on it.
If you use it soon, acid will kill everything anyway, ha ha .

Re: Do we have to keep exhaust fan on 24/7

As I do not go in there every day, I only turn fan on a few minutes before going in. I do have cross ventilation, but I always turn the fan on.

Re: Disposing of broken mercury thermometers

Yes, I agree, it goes against everything we know, but I too, read it as" bin it" after it has been neutralized with sulfur.

Re: Disposing of broken mercury thermometers

CSIS recommends covering droplets of Hg with S to form harmless HgS. So I guess bin it is OK.
Any other ideas?

Re: Broken Glassware

We have a separate bin for broken glass and when full I tape lid down and dispose in outside large collection bins for general rubbish. It cannot be recycled. In last 4 weeks I have filled 2x A4 size boxes with lots of glass including 3Lbeaker, grrrr :redcard: my only one

Re: Splints?

For H2 testing I use bamboo sticks or even toothpicks blu-tacked to bamboo sticks, so can be easily replaced .
For O2 testing I usually use soft (balsa )wood which is easier re-lit as a positive test.

Yes, Ocker's right. I get mine from local creek and grow it in our separate fishtank just for this weed. It is not banned from schools, (yet?)

Re: starch

I use the biodegradable beans with great success.
Just put 3-4 in 100ml hot water and stir to dissolve.
Love it.

Re: Preserved Animals

We did replace old solutions of formalin with alcohol. There doesn't seem to be any deterioration.
I collected the old solution, stored in in hazchem cabinet until chemical collection at the end of year.

Re: Insurance travelling while shopping for school

I now shop during work time, using work's car. School seems to prefer it that way, but it takes a big chunk out my time in labs. Better be safe (insured) than sorry.
