Re: chemwatch labels

This is precisely why I am waiting for a definate directive from the Department with regard to exactly what the labels on school chemicals need to look like. I do not wish to waste time and resources putting wrong or overdone labels on things. I understand from previous post that work in underway on...

Re: testing and tagging of equipment

From my experience in my outside school life as a a partner in an Electrical contracting firm with my husband, the frequency that an item needs to be tested and tagged depends a lot on the item and the environment that it is used in. It all relates to The Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760 In service s...

Re: Help Making Ferric Solutions

I think they need that higher concentration because "that is what the book said"
how well do we know that what is in the book does not always work!
The people writing the book sometimes hasn't tried to actually do the prac.
In thoery it should work but not in practice.

I can't remember the last time I used the bunsen burner in the fume hood.
Just wondering what you are doing that it needs to be in the fume hood?

Re: registration

Just a thought  Today I recieved a new bottle of Copper sulphate with all the GHS details already on it so it doesn't need any labelling other than the green dot. But what I did before I put it in its appropriate shelf in the chem store was write on the label Storage DG Class 9 Miscellaneous...

Re: GHS and Labels

I can't find the D-Gen labels.
I don't seem to have an a-z icon or something that looks like a house.
I am in a DEC school and using CG3 also there is a message comming up as I start Chemwatch telling me the program will be obsolete in 89 days, does anyone else get that message.

Re: registration

I haven’t done anything about labelling as I am waiting until the DEC lets us know exactly what is required on the labels. My main concern is the fact that all our chemicals are at the moment stored in their classes and we know what classes may or may not be stored beside each other. Under th...

Re: Do you use distilled water all the time

I use distilled water to make up senior chemicals including acids/bases when they need to be made for titrations etc The stock solutions of acids and bases for junior classes are made up with tap water that is all that is really necessary for the purposes they are used for. HCl 1M made with tap wate...

Armidale TAFE also runs this course and have in the past done Cert IV in laboratory techniques. I am just about finished this with a workshop this weekend. They do it through distant education with 8 to 10 hours per week home based study with Moodle and workbook activities. Fortnightly on-line teach...

Last week I made hand prints after handling hearts etc for dissection that were then used the next day with Luminol. The Luminol is not cheap. Check around the different suppliers it can vary in price from $80 - $ 150 for only 5 grams. Check your recipe, I have one that calls for 2gm luminol in 250 ...

Re: Cleaning Copper pieces

I would not use Nitric acid, Nitrogen Dioxide has an EXTREME hazard warning on Chemwatch. I was once accidentally exposed to this in my early days as a labbie tipping an unmarked beaker of clear solution down a sink that had small bits of copper in the bottom. There was this puff of brown gas that s...

Was " working with dangerous chemicals" marked in a box as the form was being filled out or is it something the bank deems is part of being a school lab assistant.

Re: How many prac's in 1 day?

I think part of the problem here is an aging staff. My teacher range from 41-59 with an average age of 52. Most are "old school" and have trouble with the discipline and maintaining control of the students of today and just "can't face " the hassles of flames, chemicals, trying t...

Re: How many prac's in 1 day?

This got me thinking so I have gone back over my prac book for 2013. The teachers write on an order form which I then copy into my prac book which has a space for each lesson where I put the teachers name, room and the basics of what is ordered. This sometime lists everything and others just somethi...

I have a bottle of glycerine that I use specifically for fixing thermometers. It has a boiling point of 290 so I carefully heat it in a beaker on the hot plate whilst holding the thermometer in the liquid . Watching carefully as the alcohol rises in the tube, joining together as it does so. Remove t...

At $116 for a bottle why can't they just use normal nutrient agar.

I figure if in 15 years I have never been asked for a product it is not specifically required in the sylabus and a substitute can be found.
