Re: Mineral and rock safety alert

Whilst looking at other CSIS information today I came across this Safety Alert issued by the NSW department of Education in February this year https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/workhealthandsafety/safety-alerts It is alert no 59 It says pretty much the same as previous alerts we have read here but is no...

Re: Dry Ice SDS

I think a little common-sense is necessary. The inherent dangers of a large amount of dry ice is vastly different to 1kg in an esky. I have to drive about 4 km to pick up the dry ice and then quite happily drive back to school with it in a 6pack esky in the back of a station wagon. About 5 min. Ther...

Re: Agar Plates pricing for students

Due to our severe budget constraints earlier this term I worked out how much Agar plates cost with the way I make them up. We buy the plates in bulk cartoons of 500 plates and use a plain agar /nutrient agar mix. This is my breakdown Cost of Agar Plates Each plate costs $0.16 Have to use 20 plates $...

Re: labeling old chemicals in store

I can't see anything there that says the old labels should be covered. My experience with the original labelling following the CSIS was that incorrect labels were affixed to bottles, probably all in good faith by inexperienced people. Maybe picking up the wrong bottle, the label belonged to another ...

Re: Ammonium hydroxide solution

In my recipe book I have dilution figures for Ammonia at different percentages to make 1M. From memory I sourced this information from reliable sources many years ago when I made up my table. 10% 178ml reagent/822 water for a litre volume 18% 105 ml/895 water 25% 75ml/925 water 28% 68ml/932 water 35...

Re: Risk Assess and labels

We don't use Risk Assess.
What I wonder is, when we haven't received the upgraded CSIS or any other information from the Department regarding different classifications, are the Risk Assess user group classifications what will be in the upgraded CSIS or his own classifications.

Here we also have enough to have one stored under each work station along with a tripod, gauze, test tube holder, boss head, clamp, Plastic filter funnel, pipeclay triangle and test tube brush. With only me, 4 days and 1 hour a week and 7 labs I have tried to make each area as self sufficient as pos...

Re: pH solution

For this prac we just use HCl 0.05 M which has a molarity about 2.4 HCl 0.01 M which came in about 4.34 Distilled water 6.5 NaOH 0.01M 9.03 NaOH 0.05 M 11.9 The idea is to show that different pH will affect the action of an enzyme. It didn't really matter if the pH was not exactly 3,5,7,9,and 11. Th...

Re: labeling old chemicals in store

I also have made my own templates that are the size of a J8165 Avery label. I make sure if possible that the new label does not occlude the old label with the chemicals name on it so the person using the chemical can be sure that the new label is correct just with the updated information. I have not...

I Know you can get the tablets, but we have used this enzyme prac as our Year 12 assessment task for the last 8 odd years. Each student is given 0.7gms of powder in a specimen jar which they make up to 50 mls. They then use this solution at a ratio of 1ml to 10 mls milk to investigate the effect of ...

After almost 2 years of the boxes just sitting on the shelves the staff are starting to use them which then means the batteries on the multi meters are going flat. There-in lies my problem. I may be having a "teacher" moment and not being able to fix something myself but I have unscrewed w...
