Re: Has anyone ever added bacteria to agar before pouring??
In 14 Years of working as the Science Assistant I have never been asked to make plate with bacteria or specifically inoculate plate with bacteria. I would personally be very wary about using Staph or E-coli having seen in my previous life of 16 years as a Registered Nurse what these organisms can do...

Re: Help Please- pH solutions for enzyme pracs
We use capsicum or spinach(silverbeet) that has been blended as our substrate for the effect of pH tests and hydrogen peroxide. These are the 2 files I have on the method. As you see we use measuring cylinders to put the solutions in and measure the "froth" which worked out easier then mea...

Re: Junket!!
We use the powder as we go through rather a lot each year as the action of temperature is used as an individual assessment task for our Yr 12. We have had up to 60 bio students each needing their own little jar. We found the powder worked out cheaper in the long run for us and lasts several years. I...

Is it a prac she has done before or just found it in a book. ( We all know how unworkable some of them are) :-| For reasons unknown, probably left over fromYr 10 Projects many years ago, I have 2 different bottles of Liquid Starch in my chem store. I tried the prac using these 2 mixed 1part starch t...

Re: Seasons (in the sun?) - but no joy or fun.....
Thanks to this thread I have had the song in my brain all day
From the discussion it seems it is "seasons out of time"
I wondered if those of us who are not of a certain age were thinking "what is he on about with that title?"

Re: what weird/quirky things do your teachers ask of you?
My worst was when one of them handed me her name badge and asked(told) me to fix it.
The are ones with magnetic backs and the metal bar had come adrift of the name badge.
Just needed to have the badge and bar reglued!!!!!
And she couldn't do that herself!

Re: Ammonium nitrate
I discovered totally by accident about a week ago as i was preparing a Potassium Iodide solution that it also is markedly endothermic. I have just done a very quick comparison of a small spatula of KI in 10mls of water compared to the same amount of Ammonium Nitrate in the same amount of water plus ...

We have a book room (well cupboard really, about 2m x 3m with shelves on 2 sides and a hook on the third wall). On this we have the large charts hanging and small ones on a hook behind the door. They are seldom used, I think the only one that is ever used is the Periodic Table and that by one teache...

We have 7 labs and 3 fume hood thanks to renovations several years ago. There is one accessable from my prep room and the adjoining lab amd 2 other just in labs. Apart from mine they are rarely used. Re: Diluting Agar
Rosemary,
Just so I know I have this right,
You have measured 200 gm of Nutrient Agar and 186gm plain agar and mixed them together and then use 15gm/litre of the Agar mixture.
Thanks,
Wendy

Finding phosphate levels with a Vernier colorimeter
We have recently received our new Vernier Lab Quest 2 with a colorimeter. My Chem teacher had hoped to use it to test for Phosphate in the Water Quality in Yr 12 Chem but it seems I need Hach Phos Ver 3 phosphate powder pillows to use it. I have never heard of these and can't seem to be able to find...

Re: smelling substances.
My smelly jars contain stuff like coffee, vinegar, tea leaves, cloves, eucyluptus oil, curry powder. For this exercise I personally would not be concerned about the SDS on vinegar etc saying not to inhale. You are only using small amounts, remember they tell you to use skin protection when using hand...

We have 4 Adam 600gm x .1gm for our junior classes and I have found them very good.
They cost $164 each. We decided for junior purposes we didn't need to go any lower then 0.1gm increments.

This information may help. I discovered it whislt organising a resume for my husband for a job in WA. My son at the Gold Mine Kalgoorlie altered WHS to OH & S on the draft resume as he had not heard of WHS, so I investigated and found that there were several states that had not yet signed off on...

Be VERY VERY VERY careful of Nitrogen Dioxide which is the gas produced when copper is added to Nitric acid. On Chemwatch it has EXTREME hazard. It is extremely hazardous to the lungs, symptoms may not develop for 24 hours. It can only be used with year 7 in a concentration of 0.1% and i don't know ...
