Re: 8 Week course
I read somewhere that most schools (perhaps not poor Dept schools as they won't have much choice) won't want to employ them as the course isn't long enough to really develop good teachers..... just a thought - don't shoot the messenger!

Hi guys, I have a Y12 chem prac using a variable resistor. We don't have any (that I can find!) but to order one I can't find them. Are they the same as potentiometers??

Re: Washing lab coats
Hey Fiona, maybe we should try & work out a cost of the water & wear & tear on our washing machine for doing it?
I would love to bleach etc... but it's all I can manage to just get the damn things washed every time!

Re: Washing lab coats
How tragic... here I am on a Saturday afternoon getting my fix of Chemtalk!! Anyway, I take all ours home & wash them at the end of each semester or as they need. The school pays for the washing powder. I hate doing it, the lugging to the car, the lugging out of the car & up my steps...

Re: soap making
I'm sure it's just the solidified fat from a cow... but you can't substitute butter - it doesn't have a high enough melting temperature. I wonder if suet or lard would do? But I'm with Rowy... phewwwwwwww! :boring: So I reckon go for vegie or some other sort of plant oil too. Hopefully it would work?!

The problem is that they are quoted different agencies - NOHSC, Worksafe... they are all supposed to work together.
I always use the manufacturers MSDS & then check against ChemWatch & take the most paranoid!

Re: Glass wool
Ahhh detection tubes - to detect various gases. Like a home-made breathalyser... Glass tube filled with non-indicating silica gel (soaked in the chemical you want the gas to react with) & then glass wool tucked at both ends to keep it all packed in nicely. You whoosh some ethanol in a conical fl...
