Re: flame test in spray bottles??

For safety reasons I don't allow chemicals to be sprayed . We use wire loops that we made with wine corks as the holders. works great and used by our year 10's and seniors only

Re: rat dissection

We have to use places that our animal ethic committee( Catholic Edu) have ticked off as good to use in the ACT . So we get our frozen rats from the Reptile Zoo, they are fantastic specimens plus much cheaper than Southern Biological. A pack of 5 large rats is $40 , there breed for food.

Re: Dishwasher Meile vs Omega(on special at Westlab $505)

We bought a Meile lab dishwasher 3 years ago. Yes it's expensive , around the $8000 mark with the extras we bought with it but we have never looked back. The money we have saved with the normal dishwashers breaking down and maintenance has been huge. We haven't had any issues so far and it gets a bi...

I agree with Merilyn too .
I read through all the pracs to make sure it's right for that year group . Once it's done, there isn't much change for the following year.

Our students only use it now once we have made the solution, we don't give them the solid form.

Re: Animals in schools

We have 6 turtles in a special outdoor area that has only one entrance to it but windows all around for students to see them moving around. It's our job to clean out the pond 4 times a year and feed them in the warmer months of the year. We use them for year 7 science, living and non-living plus sen...

Re: cleaning the science labs

We only clean up the Teachers desk in the lab and equipment trolleys and bays but as for the general clean up of the room, well that's up to the Teachers and the HOD and I are always reminding them that it's their work space so clean it. Even this I can only do when the time and opportunity comes ab...

I also have compactus and grantell shelves in the prep-room and love it for easy storage and access to equipment. I have all the shelves labled A1 to N6 with a list of what is on each shelve. This has taken me years to complete where I'm now really happy with our system

Re: New Labs - starting from scratch

We have only 6 Labs with a class in for every lesson( that's 5 periods a day each), 4 are for the Jnr's and 2 Snr ones.We have just over 1250 students from year 7 to 12. All 7-10 do science and that's 8 classes per year group plus we have 2 yr11 chem classes, 2 yr12 Chems, 2 yr11 bio, 2 yr12 bio, 1 ...

Re: GHS Labelling and frustrations with Chemwatch

If you look up ASSIST ( Australian school science information support for Teachers and Technicians) , this is a new website that was released this year and is building. They can help and I know that labels is a priority for them to sort out so we can use there site once it's complete. England has th...

Hi Amanda, I really can't believe that they would put you in this position with not even basic knowledge or help to run the science prep-room.This is why Schools still have nasty accidents :( I go through a company called toxfree for all my chemical waste pick up( most of us do ) and they give you c...
