Re: Open Day Ideas

The steady hand set-up is always popular. That's what I call it anyway. Copper wire attached to a base both ends and winding around in a curve, a circle of wire attached to alligator clip and create a circuit with either a buzzer or a globe. They try to get along the wire without touching it and mak...

Re: what formal qualifications, if any do you all have?

I did Cert IV Applied Science - Chemistry. Was going to do the Diploma but could only do it full time and I didn't want to lose this job. Besides I've learnt so much with 'on-the-job' training and conferences and it's been fun learning it all.

Check with CSIS and WHS for the chemicals you use to embed. There can be issues that need to be overcome.

Re: AUDIT

If the chemical or product is on site then it has to be on a chemical stocktake list. If there was a fire the fire department needs to know what is on site - contractor or not.

Is it bromine or bromine water? Pure bromine is restricted to 10 ml.

Re: Bromine water

I thought we used ampoules because we can't keep any more than 10 ml of Bromine on site?

Re: Bromine water

I still use the ampoules. There were 6 here when I started here and I'm using them until they're gone. CSIS has the pure bromine as teacher use only. I prepare the bromine by using the instructions in CSIS volume 2 appendix B by opening the bromine ampoule (1 ml) under water (200 ml) in a fume cupbo...

Re: Animals in schools

Yabbies and fish. I bring the yabbies home with me on term holidays and the fish at Christmas. That way I know they will survive. I'd rather do this than travel to the school in my holidays. One teacher wanted tarantulas but I gave him a risk assessment of the requirements and we never got them.

Re: Digital MSDS database?

I have a digital copy that I put on a USB ready to take if we have to evacuate off site - the fire brigade asked for this. I do this after my annual stocktake each year. This same file is available to all staff on our computers. We had a fire several years ago and the School was commended on the fac...

That's classic. We do get asked for some unusual things don't we. Why can't the daughter do it herself?

Do a search for 'Borax' March 2007 - makes a Christmas snowflake but it takes a couple of days.
