Spectral lamps
Hi all, We have a really old Selby Spectral lamp stand. The only lamps I have for it are Ne, Hg and Na, and we are keen to buy some more lamps. I can't find them anywhere. They were made in the '60's and are the screw in type (not pins). Can anyone suggest where I could get some? Regards 8) , Ellice

Plant seeds and agar
Hi gang,
Here's a curly one:
One of the ground staff here has an orchid that has seeded (unusual apparently), and has asked me about an agar gel to put it in to get it going.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
With Adipic acid you use 1,6-diaminohexane (hexamethlenediamine).
Hope this helps.

Re: Chemwatch Gold 11 for dept NSW ONLY
I am at a private school and received the same message about the change to ChemFFX. I've had a bit of a play around with the new site, and can find MSDS, labels, etc for chemicals, but am not having any success with molarities of solutions.
How's everyone else going?

Re: vacuum filtration
Sintered glass crucibles are used with filtration flasks to filter very fine particles. The filtration flasks are connected to venturi pumps that use water as the source of suction. I think a lot of us are doing the prac at the moment . ie Sulfate in Fertiliser. I purchased some sintered glass cruci...

Hi Maria,
Our Yr12 class just did an assessment prac on Enzymes, and I gave them 1% solutions for all enzymes, and they adjusted to what strength they wanted. Didn't have any trouble with dissolving.
Hope this helps.

Amylase
Hi all,
This is an SOS to Wollongong schools. I am desperate for the enzyme Amylase for a Yr12 Bio Prac test. Just realised mine is out of date.

Re: Position 2011
Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm working full time at the moment, but would like to return from LSL in term 2 to a job sharing position. What hours/days are you doing at the moment? Maybe we could work something out.
Cheers, Ellice.

Position 2011
Hi all,
I know it's a long way off, but I'm having Term 2 off next year, and then would like to return in a part time capacity. So, if anyone knows of someone who would be interested, please contact me. I've trained the science people well, and the kids are pretty easy!
Cheers, Ellice.

Re: Potassium Chromate Indicator
Hi Carol,
We've just done this prac. The students added the chromate as an indicator, and then titrated with silver nitrate. I'm not sure what you mean with the resting and filtering out. (actually that sounds like something I'd like to do!!)
Cheers, Ellice.

Re: Sulfate in Fertiliser Prac
Hi Lada,
We use a fertiliser from Bunning's. I just had a look, and it's 'Sulfate of Ammonia'. It has the %SO4 on it. Never tried Epsom salts.

Hi Kathryn,
I use Eddie Bishop from Wilton. Phone 0429304492. He usually comes down and services microscopes on site. Good for all other repairs as well.

Re: Sulfate in Fertiliser Prac
Hi there, Are you doing the experiment where you add BaCl2 to precipitate out the BaSO4? The problem we have is hoping the particles are large enough to filter out. We use sintered glass crucibles on flasks attached to venturi pumps. Last year we had good results, but I noticed the word HOT written ...

Hi all, For the last few years, we've just knotted the dialysis tubing top and bottom with the solution inside (looks like a sausage) , and then this goes in a measuring cylinder. You can tie a string around the end of the 'sausage', and attach to measuring cylinder, then it is easily pulled up to s...

Beaker mugs
Hi all,
The gang here are keen to have Beaker mugs to drink their coffee out of! All the suppliers I've found are in US, and I wondered if anyone knew of a local supplier.
I thought they would make nice gifts for relieving teachers.

Hi Lada,
That is so unfair. I was asked to justify my position many years ago, and went to see the head with a list of my duties. Would that help? I could fax them through if you like.

Can't wait to tell the gang that one. I'm going to practise my speech tonight.
So, it would be a physical change, not chemical. Tricky!!!
Thanks Smiley.

Hi Smiley,
Those suggestions are great.
Just one question. The heating of the ZnO. It changes colour from white to yellow. What does it change to?
I need this info in case someone asks. And I like to look like I know what I'm talking about!!!
Cheers, Ellice.
