Re: Airconditioning labs
Think about chemicals! What temperature are they to be kept at? When I worked in industry the ONLY reason we got air-conditioning was to keep the electronic balances at a set temperature! Then they realised the chemicals needed to be kept under 30 degrees.. so THAT is why they air conditioned the la...

Re: risk assess tips or tricks
I have heard of labtechs writing the Risk Assessments for teachers, and one who was recently instructed to do so! I thought that that was a teacher's responsibility! Does anyone know where the regulations are as to that? Pay me bigger bucks and I will take on that responsibility - BECAUSE I think th...

Re: Pracs that are soley stationary supplies
I just went into one lab to clean and tidy before school - and EVERY pair of scissors has gone, most of the small staplers and almost all of the coloured pencils are broken and it is only Week 7! How come teachers do not take care of the resources they have? how hard is it to count back in the sciss...

Re: labeling old chemicals in store
Has anyone else ever thought that we ALL struggle to do the right thing - we ALL help each other in knowing what we shoudl and shouldn't do, and yet it is our EMPLOYER who should be telling US what is the legal requirements. In any other industry or workplace we would be TOLD what we had to do - esp...

Re: labeling old chemicals in store
I was told it was not legal to cover up the original label - so I am slowly working through putting GHS labels on the back of the bottle, so they have both the old and the new - THAT way I cover all bases.

Re: Chemical transport in lifts
Architects! DO NOT GET ME STARTED! When I worked in the Uni, the store man woudl put the chemicals in the goods lift and then go in the persons lift - he never traveled in the lift with the chemicals. However, we have only one lift - and that is a NEW advancement in this place. My prep room and 4 la...

Re: Website - Risk Assess
I would not be agreeing to go higher than you think your skills are - I would probably put you at 2 or maybe 3. This means that they can't expect you to have the knowledge of a senior teacher or a chemist, also that you shouldn't be handling concentrated acids or bases or any chemicals that are not ...

Re: Bunsen burner hose
I love the blue silicone tubing from Westlab - it has a square outer profile so it sits flat on the bench. The hosing you are referring to is the type they use in high pressure systems -it is called PVC BRAIDED HOSE PIPE REINFORCED TUBING . You can find it on ebay and some other specialist suppliers...

Re: Bunsen Burner storage
I was going to get a storage board - but then realised that the teachers here would not use it - I see how they handle all the other gear that have storage options, so I am not wasting time, strees and breath on it. They can just shove the bunsens into a cupboard as they have done for 30 years
