Re: Problems with AgNO3 solution
I think I should go into the Silver Nitrate black market. I have been here 20 years and have NEVER purchased a new bottle of Silver nitrate. I have 475gms of silver Nitrate still left At $100 + for 25 gms I am sitting on a fortune! Even at around $400 for 100gms its worth a lot. :w00t: That is one ...

Re: Repairs to Science equipment
This morning Bob Death came to the North Shore and spent a couple of hours repairing and assessing equipment for me. I don't know how much it will come to, but I have a large pile of back-to-life equipment! So much cheaper than buying new, and so much better for the environment :clap3: I'm sure thos...

Re: Textbooks
We're in the same boat - a lot of Heinneman text books and others. I hate to throw anything away, there is always someone whose needs are greater than mine.

Re: Glass rod puzzle
I was laughed at when I put the rubber end in the solution - that's apparently the bit that you are meant to hold! Don't have many left now, replacing them slowly with the white stirring rods, I think they're great.

Re: LEAD NITRATE
This is always my example I use when talking about how old, and out of date CSIS is. It is a crime that students in DET schools are being exposed to a chemical that has now been found to be so toxic. Not to mention the poor labbies that handle the solid. It really is time the DET caught up with the...

Re: Dropper bottle teats
I don't have any dropper bottles anymore all in stull bottles no more contamination, less spills and very little deterioration. Silver nitrate bottles are covered in foil been using like that for 8-9 years now not a problem. Iodine in amber regent bottles kid use disposable droppers. Macca , how do...

Re: Spring Balances
Great idea, Labbie!
Might not be necessary with this new design, the markings are printed on the inside of the tubing, doesn't look like they can be worn away by the sliding marker.

Re: Spring Balances
I've recently bought a new Premium style, much better and stronger than the old style. From Haines, code P350. Not cheap at $16 but hopefully an investment. We are keeping them for Seniors and letting the juniors use the old tubular ones. Until recently we were using the even older version, essentia...

Re: Oil for separation and rusting pracs
We use vegetable oil in a separating funnel as well, but I don't bother cleaning it. Just drain as much as possible and then label it "Use with oil", so the same one gets used each time. And the rusty nails - I've tried some different ideas this year, still to decide if any of them worked ...

Perhaps a hands-on prac, or demo, on the topic of Agar plates - preparation, use, what to avoid as well as safe disposal.
And yes - pracs that work would be great for everyone!

Re: dishwasher rack
Yes it works really well for most glassware - but it doesn't take the 100ml measuring cylinders. Trust me, it's a great investment, so much more useful than the rack used in kitchen dishwashers, I don't know why I even keep the one that came with the washer! Actually, I have put that on top of the d...

Re: dishwasher rack
Best thing I bought was the dishwasher test tube rack (from Haines I think, but others also stock it). It's expensive but has paid for itself several times over. I can fit so much more into the dishwasher, including the baskets Merilyn is talking about, which are also brilliant for things like petri...

Re: Year 12 Biology Depth Studies
Hear hear, jamo - they certainly didn't think it through when they changed the Syllabus. 70-80% of my time in Term 1 was spent on Chemistry, with a lot of overtime (unpaid). Everything else fell apart and it caused a lot of tension in the staff room (to say nothing of mine!)
