Re: How are you purchasing chemicals & Groceries

We shop at the local IGA and SPAR, butcher, bakery etc. They send us a monthly account.
Chemicals etc I shop around and print off the online order list without actually submitting the order. I give my SAM a copy of this list and she places the order.

Re: Welcome back

My husband and I are planning a drive to Adelaide in May. We'll take some LSL and we'll head off to who knows where along the way. Check out some inland places and drive along the Murray on the way home. Maybe do a daytrip on a paddleboat. We are edging closer to retirement but still a few years to ...

Re: Hospital Grade Disinfectant

I use 70% ethanol. Can't remember where I heard/read that this was the way to go, maybe when I learned how to prepare agar plates all those years ago.

Ha ha do you think they'd have the slightest clue??
My SAM is lovely but even more clueless about Science than I used to be before it became second nature.

Re: Are you all alseep????????? or too HOT

Sadly, here at work. :cry2: :cry2: Would like to be just about anywhere else, but here we are. Counting down till next Tuesday afternoon. We were given the option (as a group) to do the training to make up the time and not work next week but had to go with the majority, so they will be dragging me, ...

Re: Staffing levels

As far as I know, in DoE schools it is up to the SAM to determine where you are needed most, although most SAMs wouldn't have a clue what we do. #-o #-o

Me too. Our local medical centre (closed down now, sadly) used to let me have 50 or so at a time for nothing.

Re: Do you move around?

I get really annoyed at other support staff who pretend they are always busy, when I know they are not. We have one of those here who drives me crazy!!  She has plenty of time to stand around gossiping and whinging, but if you ask her about her day, she just rolls her eyes and compla...

Re: Glass tubing

Thanks everyone.
I have ordered some new glass tubing which I hope is better quality, and a hand protector. If I try all the tricks suggested, my hands should be safe!! :console: :console:

And they smell!!! :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: The worst job of all was cleaning out their tanks :cry2: :redcard: I suggest keeping them in small tanks that will fit into the dishwasher. I had one large one that I had to wash out myself and a couple of smaller ones that fit into the dishwasher. So much easi...

Re: Yabbies

We used to feed them dog pellets when we had them years ago. They will eat their babies (and each other) if you don't keep them separated. They are also great escape artists. A few times the cleaner found dead ones that had escaped overnight and died on the floor. #-o :yuck:

A little gunpowder in a particular part of this HT's anatomy might be appropriate here!! :redcard: :redcard: When I see these posts about how much trouble labbies have with their faculty and/or school, I feel very blessed. Most of our staff appreciate my skills and whatever knowledge I can contribut...

Hi Soozle
I don't think I would store concentrated sulphuric in dropper bottles of any kind. Who uses a class set of concentrated sulphuric?

Re: Glass tubing

Thanks for the input, everyone, my hand is ok and don't have to have time off, but potentially could be a lot worse. I like the idea of the PPE tubing - hadn't thought of that. Sounds like a great solution - I'll give it a try.

Re: Glass tubing

Thank you, yes, I have tried lubricating the glass, it is just not up to the job. The kind of thing I'll be doing with the glass is bending it for pasteur's experiment and setting it up with a stopper into a conical flask, or just straight through a stopper for a conical flask for expansion of liqui...

Glass tubing

A quick distress call, having just cut myself while pushing glass tubing through a rubber stopper hole. (Not for the first time) :cry2: The glass tubing that I have had in the cupboard for a couple of years - long enough that I can't remember where I bought it - is very poor quality and breaks in my...
