Re: Litmus Paper

Hi Di

I store some litmus paper in a jar with a few drops of ammonia. Put something between the paper and the ammonia so only the fumes get to the paper. Works ok. :-)

Re: 2007 Chemical Safety in Schools Update Course

Hi to the other country kids

I've applied for T&D funding for the course costs and air fares. Hopefully the powers that be will come to the party and any other expenses I will claim on my tax. I have a friend I can stay with in Sydney. Might make a weekend of it. \:D/

Re: 2007 Chemical Safety in Schools Update Course

Does anyone know if there will be any similar training conducted in regional areas? I would love to do this course, in fact I think it may be the one I booked and paid for last year but they cancelled it. :? It would be a lot easier for some of us country kids if we could have more local access to t...

Absolutely! I wash nearly EVERYTHING in mine. Some days I'd almost climb in there myself if I could. How do you survive without one? And ours is a very small school with only 2 labs! \:D/

Re: Lolly Sedimentary rock

Hi Lindy

Go to http//www.nasaexplores.com/show_k4_teacher_sh ... 0803103618 for some different recipes for various types of rocks. Looks like you could make it reasonably cheap by varying some of the ingredients. Very American but just use our alternatives.

The Surfing Scientist on the ABC website is worth a try. All sorts of odd things and conundrums that will confound and baffle your students. Some are ordinary and predictable :coffee: some are good fun and will have them mystified. 8O This guy did a presentation at the last St Marys conference. His ...

Hi Tammy Way before my time here I know that students have prepared things like rat and rabbit skeletons by boiling off the flesh. Re: Crystal making

Thank you for your contributions. We have settled for copper sulphate and bought some from our local produce store for $4.50 per kg. Probably not of the standard required for senior chemistry experiments, but fine for making crystals and the usual 'bucket chemistry' we conduct in the junior school. ...

Re: Crystal making

Thanks Kristin Checked out the CSIRO website and had a bit of a play around with various substances. We finally settled on the good old copper sulfate crystals. Yowch!!
8O :cry2:
I would suggest either a spray of WD40, or perhaps a soak in paraffin or some other oil. Leave it over the weekend and on Monday give it a GENTLE tap.
Hopefully that will do the trick.

Good luck
