Re: Design of new laboratory.

Hi Susie, Most of my likes/dislikes have been covered, but a few things worth mentioning are; if having safety equipment or chem room installed, make sure that it is able to be plumbed in,that ,if need be, ventillation can be installed, and exhaust/vents can be connected to flow outside.(a few mista...

Re: Taste Tests and PTU

Hi All,
I buy mine from Omega Scientific (S.A.company) for $6.00 per vial of 100. They also sell control papers for the same price, some teachers like to have those on hand too. They have no taste to react to, but the students don't know that!
Contact number for Omega is (08)82894311

Re: making soap

Hi Pilar, We have just finished doing this prac, the labs are full of weird soap samples(they test it). We use 6M NaOH, but I only have Yr 11 and 12 here, and the teacher dispenses it from the fume cupboard. Our method is to mix the oil, alcohol and NaOH in a 100ml beaker, then place that in a 250ml...

Re: White Board Makers

Hi All, We've been trialling the Auspen refillable ones here since late last year. So far, so good. They certainly last, but do cost a bit. I've yet to do the figures on whether they are more cost effective, but it looks like the way to go. Many of the teachers that are trying them, are still on the...

Re: Projectile Launchers

Thanks Annette,
I checked that website out, and they are stockists of Pasco equipment. I can now check for any price differences. I've noticed on this site that prices can vary a lot for the same product, so it helps to have additional info

Projectile Launchers

Hi All, My Physics teachers use projectile launchers that were purchased (I think)from Omega Scientific(S.A). They are wooden, with a spring loaded mechanism that fires a single ball bearing on angles of up to 90 degrees. One teacher remembers using a different type of P.L. He says it was made of met...

Re: Separation of organic mixtures

Hi Robb,
Thanks for clarifying that for me. I'd rather ask and get it right, than get it wrong and be wasteful, or dangerous!

Separation of organic mixtures

Hi All, One of our classes is doing "separation of organic mixtures" using a mixture of three methyl butan-1-ol and benzoic acid. There was already enough of the mixture in the flammables store for them to use(made up by previous labbie)but when I need to make more, is it a particular volu...

Re: I Should Have Stayed In Bed

Hi everyone, I find the "if we all work together, things are great" approach is working for me. I like to have notice, at least 24hrs,but I am happy to do last minute stuff IF I have time. The alternative is NO, or help yourself(and clean up after yourself). In fact, a teacher has been in he...

Re: hydrochloric acid fumes

Hi Robyn, Our cupboard shelves are made of melamine, and are sealed all around. They look in good condition, but I am unsure how old they are, as I have only been here a year. I have however, just started using spray fish oil (yuk!) on the hinges and screws, recommended to me by another labbie. It is ...
