Re: disposal

In our organic pracs, teacher uses micro test tubes and the small amount of waste I put in fume cupboard to evaporate. If the waste is large and over the year or two it accumulates, I use toxfree to collect our waste. I re use as much as I can of Cu So4 to grow crystals in yr7, or re use crystals to...

Re: Chemwatch, registers, etc

Same here,
I give them template but the do their own register. It should be kept in front office, where we keep our copy, but I can guarantee that no other department has done it. My HOD wants me to help them BUT NOT DO IT for them.

Re: Benedicts Reagent wrong positive

PS You only need traces of glucose to give you a positive results, our darlings often swap lids on dropper bottles and that would be enough to contaminate gelatin.

Re: Benedicts Reagent wrong positive

No, you are not to heat the protein solution. We use very weak CuSO4 solution and 2M NaOH, It produces mauve colour.
Benedicts gives you red brick after heating glucose.

Re: Science Week

Agree with Rae, same here, teachers are ran off their feet. We had 2 prac teachers, one left after 3 days never to be seen again and the other mature student, had change profession from a lawyer to become a teacher because " they have it easy". Well after first week, he is exhausted, arriv...

Re: preserved specimens

Interesting.
I had a couple of those with no preserving fluid left, so they went to normal garbage, it is the ones with the fluid in them that are the problem.
I will have same problem if or when I get go ahead with new lot.

Re: preserved specimens

Julie,
I emptied the jars of formaldehyde into "organic waste bottle" for collection later and replaced it with 60-70% methylated spirits or ethanol (not methyl alcohol) . Specimens still look daggy but at least they are not in formaldehyde. I just want to replace them with new ones.

preserved specimens

We are being promised new labs and I was asked to start on "wish list" One would be replace all specimens in biology lab. It is time for new ones. I looked at Southern biological and they have specimens in jars preserved in alcohol. It would be very expensive to ship it with jars and alcoh...

Re: Risk Assessments

Sue, I attended one WHS seminar a few years ago by AIS (independent schools) and was told that as long as you are following CSIS it gives you generic RA and do not need to do separate RA. So I do not know how and where it all got out of control and now we pay a lot of money to get riskassess not jus...

Re: Help Making Ferric Solutions

How true. I was ask to make up 1L of AgNO3 for a displacement reaction. Put coiled Cu wire in large test tube and cover with solution of silver nitrate. 27 students of 25ml solution about 700ml needed. I gave them micro tubes small length of Cu wire and 3ml of solution each. Guess what, it worked ve...

Re: Help Making Ferric Solutions

I don't know, but why do teachers always "need" such high concentration.
I try to swap for 0.1-05M solutions which will give them same results.
Just make sure all solutions are same conc, if they take measurements.

Re: Risk Assessments

Hi Dave, we use riskassess and on page 2 where they have the level of risk is certification by lab technician. I do the risk assessment in that column so it often differ from teachers. In case if using 2M Hcl I would assess the actual dilution from conc HCl. so my risk factor would be higher than st...
