Re: Was there an official memo about GHS ?

I've been telling people about GHS every year for the past 3 or 4 years, every time chemical register sheets have to be filled in for the year - out goes the email. Yeah.

Re: Was there an official memo about GHS ?

GHS was brought up at our last WHS meeting. They seemed to think it was a brand new thing, and I don't think anyone is all that worried!

Re: SciList

I don't use it. I have mine on excel. We had a presentation at a PD day a few years ago about it. It seemed to be a lot of work to set it up, for not a lot of benefit. I don't think it would work in our workplace.

Acids on carbonates

OK so they are doing the acids on carbonates prac where they use sea shells, marble, egg shell and snail shells. Well we seem to either be in a snail drought, or my snails are turbo charged. I planted out a bunch of lettuces, laid a half a box of snail bait, next morning all my lettuces gone, not a ...

beam balances.

Does anyone still use beam balances? We have about 15, and we just got another 6 or so because " they don't won't zero or work and need to be chucked" . I got all of them to zero and work. #-o They only get used for prac tests, and I don't think the students will ever use one again in thei...

Re: Chemffx credo labelling help!

I've entered one chemical that shows an R phrase under the material name in the list, but nothing comes up on any of the labels. Out of curiosity I entered a solution I know to be dangerous, which showed 6 R phrases, but nothing on any of the labels. I can't see that I've done anything differently w...

Chemffx credo labelling help!

Hi I am trying to generate labesls in credo, although there are r phrases and jazard diamonds where the substance is listed in the catalogue, the ones I have tried to generate today do not have these included, or any warnings, when I preview the label. I can't work out what I am doing wrong. Thought...

Re: rat dissection

I was told to get them from research at westmead hospital, as they are bred for that purpose. But I just tell me staff no. I am not tying up rats to boards! (or going in my time, car, fuel etc to pick them up) I used to get them from the local university, but the supply became haphazard, ...

Re: risk assess tips or tricks

Just had a newish teacher walk in, she had done an RA for the prac she wanted next lesson, which Didn't have chemicals in this case. But she had no idea what she was doing. "I guess I better read the test book" :whistling2: she then realised she actually wanted another prac , but had copie...

Re: risk assess tips or tricks

That's what I keep telling her. It takes no longer to send a risk assess, in fact it takes much less time as I'VE written most of them already! Nothing gets lost, everyone can see who has ordered what when, and who ordered it first!

Re: risk assess tips or tricks

Do people use risk assess for everything? I have that teacher, who unfortunately is the HOD, who won't do them unless she thinks they are totally necessary.Ie she will walk in and grab stuff, or send me an email, that may or may not get lost in the dozens of emails that fly around here daily. I want...

Re: Is borax really a teacher only chemical?

I will bring this to the attention of the teacher involved - she IS of a child bearing age. But doesn't the fact that she didn't pick up on this herself show that the Risk Assessment wasn't even read???? I've just pointed it out to her, and she's not impressed. She's been doing this prac for years ...

Has anyone else ever thought that we ALL struggle to do the right thing - we ALL help each other in knowing what we shoudl and shouldn't do, and yet it is our EMPLOYER who should be telling US what is the legal requirements. Re: labeling old chemicals in store

What about my old "mate" the groundsman. (I use the term loosely) who I struggle to get to fill in any form of chemical register, let alone one a reasonable person would believe is valid. I shudder to think what he has down there that he hasn't declared and how old it is.
