Re: face shields

Jeez macca. Fatal if inhaled, according to SDS. You should definitely have had a breathing mask with a filter on it, not a 50 cent COVID mask. I'm going to look into this too. Will let you know how I go. My school doesn't have mercuric oxide and I'm very glad. SDS says re respirator: Type -P Filter ...

Re: flame test in spray bottles??

Why do you need to seal the jar? I just soak them in a beaker.

Re: chemical waste

Copper compounds should not go down the sink. I put my copper waste in ice cream containers to evaporate. When the water is gone, I scrape the residue into a bin. Or you could save it for collection.

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

We're going to get one of the nitrile glove recycling boxes and see how long we can make it last. Yes, they are expensive, but we can't keep chucking stuff into landfill. What price a healthy planet?

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

Terracycle sell boxes for recycling nitrile gloves (among other things - check out the website). I'll try to talk the head teacher into getting one.

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

Yes, I'll give them the acid test - literally. They are meant to be as good as other nitrile gloves. I just read the spec sheet and there's no detail on who decides that they can be marketed as "biodegradable", or the conditions required to degrade the gloves. More info definitely required...

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

I got it too! We'll definitely be trying these. I'll also check out the details to make sure they're truly biodegradable. I'm so pleased about this trend for stuff to be good for the planet.

Re: chemical waste

We recently had Cleanaway take chemicals for disposal. It's expensive (in the hundreds), so shop around. Most of the cost is transport - getting together with another school might help reduce the price for you. Use RiskAssess if you have it, because some stuff you can dispose of in the rubbish or do...

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

So I guess dissection gloves need to go in the rubbish bin. I'll look into getting a box for each lab, and will ask students to rinse and dry gloves before removal. I'm pleased!

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

Well, look what I found! https://glovesnow.com/guide-to-disposable-nitrile-gloves/ Are Nitrile Disposable Gloves Recyclable? Yes, Nitrile Disposable Gloves are recyclable in Australia. They can be recycled, however they need to go in a special separate recycling bin, as opposed to your standard recy...

Re: Environmental friendly Disposable Gloves?

Oh brilliant! I guess I should have consulted Google - I searched for biodegradable gloves a few years ago, but didn't find anything. I will definitely be checking this out. Thanks for the info, bindibadgi.

Re: standardized NaOH

Taken from Google. It's not about the concentration, it's about the properties of the solid chemical. Standards are used in analytical chemistry. Here, a primary standard is typically a reagent which can be weighed easily, and which is so pure that its weight is truly representative of the number of...
