Re: pinecone substitute

I just looked on YouTube and it's cool! They open and close. No idea what else would do this - good luck!

Re: Year 10 DNA Pracs.

Surely there's a way to "smoosh" fruit without a bag - mortar and pestle? Sounds like the bags do a pretty ordinary job.

Re: Year 10 DNA Pracs.

I wash and reuse zip lock bags all the time. Eventually they do have to go in the bin, sadly. Fortunately there are now some excellent compostable bags available. (Thankfully, my head teacher would never instruct me to not reuse something.)

Re: acidified potassium permanganate

This from RiskAssess for KMnO4 >0.38M disposal - <60 mL/day may be diluted with 10 times the volume of water and poured down the drain. Larger volumes should be placed in a Manganese waste container. Also from RiskAssess regarding the permanganate ion - Highly toxic to aquatic life, but reacts in se...

Re: Ammonium Phosphate?

I just googled the names and the formulae are (NH4)3PO4, NH4H2PO4, and (NH4)2HPO4 respectively. So they are different substances.

Re: Copper sulphate and iron filings

Copper sulfate shouldn't go down the sink, according to RiskAssess. I collect copper compounds in ice cream containers and leave them to evaporate. I scrape the crystals and left-over sludge into the bin (although if you want to be pedantic, that should really be saved for collection). I collect chr...

Re: A suitable demo?

Well, RiskAssess says of ethanol "HIGHLY FLAMMABLE; DO NOT USE NEAR IGNITION SOURCES." Enough said, surely. And what is this safe distance? Will it be done in a fume hood or a lab? And for heavens sake, do not take it outside! I would refuse to get this ready.

Using weight to find volume

Lately I've been using weight to measure the volume of water. One mL of water weighs one gram, so if I need 100mL of 10% NaCl solution, I'll weigh out 10g of salt and then make it up to 100g with distilled water. Surely this is more precise than most glassware. I use it for lots of solutions, as lon...

We got the 10ul ones from Southern Bio too . They have the dual action . Push and release to draw up sample push and extra push to release sample . Now you might think how hard can it be to use a micro pipette? Despite demonstrating to students multiple times about how to load and dispense sample ,...

Re: Disposal of used agar plates

Pressure cookers are really simple to use. I read the instructions carefully when we got ours coz I'd never used one either, and it turns out to be idiot-proof. Close the lid and press go! It won't work if I haven't shut it properly and it won't open until it's cool enough to be safe. Did you know b...

Re: Disposal of used agar plates

You shouldn't be opening them up, as this spreads mould spores and other microbes into the air. Definitely better to wrap and throw away. We bought a cheap pressure cooker to sterilize our plates before disposal.
