Re: Experiment gone wrong
Thanks Bigmack, it is nice to know what the DET schools are doing. I don't refer to the old CSIS at all any more, so out of date, we use Riskassess. That's our bible now a days, if I really get stuck and can't find an answer on here. I send Phillip Crisp an email. Have a lovely weekend everyone. Yep

Re: Microbiology
Firstly we are in stage 3 where I am so no plates atm. I ALWAYS pretend we have grown the plague and act accordingly. A microbiologist came in to talk to our students once and told me human viruses need blood agar to grow. Most of our growths are mould, bacteria, and fungi. Viruses need living cell...

Re: Gel electrophoresis
I've used a set up similar to this one. I can't find the actual link. http://www.exo.net/~jyu/activities/gel%20electro.pdf Instead of wires I used stainless steel electrodes mounted on their sides. (Horizontally) . I used two power packs connected in series (to give 24v) otherwise it took a while to...

Re: GHS
Thanks, that's what I thought.
However I just found out that I probably won't be kept on at this school next year,
So that will be someone else's job. (Or not)

Re: GHS
Hi can someone point me to a document and page number somewhere that spells out labelling requirements (NSWDET). My understanding was it was only stock chemicals bought from a supplier before GHS that did not need relabelling, and that all made up solutions, and decanted chemicals had to be relabell...

Staffing levels
I think there was a thread on this before, but I can't find it. Can someone tell me how many hours/ lab tech staff we are supposed to have per how many students? Thanks.

I agree. Especially when they don't use the system available to them.sunray18 wrote:I think it is the teachers problem about keeping records - not ours.. we do NOT get paid enough for this extra responsibility..

Re: Practical record keeping
I tried backing up riskassess onto discs, but apparently the discs don't like it if you try to back up onto the same disc multiple times. gave up on that. Some of our teachers use risk assess, others don't. You can lead a horse to water...

Re: New safety directions with dissection gear
I don't see the point of disinfecting it BEFORE it goes out. When it comes back, I remove the blades from the scalpels, and put everything through the dishwasher. 80 degrees for an hour. Then replace scalpel blades with new sterile ones. I used to wash everything by hand, and then soak it in alcohol...

Yes, xenon, I've seen that matrix on page 5, but I went looking for it . Just wondering if anyone else has seen it, or why we do not have access to the documents referred to.

Re: Risk Assess - Legal Issue with signing
That sounds like a good idea Rae. Presumably everyone should have access to these documents if that is what risk assessments are to be based on. Which sort of begs the question, what is everyone else basing their risk assessments on? Risk assessments are supposed to be done for sporting activities, ...

I've since found out possums LOOOOVE lettuce! Still no snails.
Yes, I also get quite a few birds. Maybe I should invest in some netting.

Re: Another GHS question...
Interesting! I have printout from the powers that be (the first evidence they knew anything about it) that appears to be the same document, and it says all bottles have to be relabelled! Perhaps safe work Australia can shed some light on this.
