Re: Banana Plugs
Having purchased the banana plugs from Haines last year, I did find them to be a good fit with the equipment. Now I have another problem. Smee posted that she never strips the wire from the end, instead screwing into the plastic coating. I've tried that and I've tried stripping the wire and bending ...

Re: GHS Labeling
I'm using Riskassess - but you'd probably get that from my previous posts. I find the Riskassess labels very simple to print off and I'm confident that the information on them is correct. Chemwatch just gives me a headache - I don't want to have to redesign my own labels. I have also encountered a n...

Re: Support structure
Good idea. I wonder if there is someone from ASET who is reading all this and can offer some suggestions?

Re: Support structure
I have yet to join the union, never got around to it. I worked in an industry previously that was non-unionised and never had a problem so am not in the habit of sending money to someone. Your story doesn't put a good case to join the union because shouldn't they be providing those services? When I ...

Re: Universal Indicator (pH 3-11)
Do you dilute the purchased one? Or use it as is? I'm curious now and am questioning my methodology!

Re: Job Vacancy NSW
No, I'm at the catholic school (not far from where you were at all). Sounds like an incredible move - what a HUGE experience! I've been given a bit over two weeks for a Yr 10 prac test, and even then it is only a draft, but assuming things won't change much from the draft. I thought I had been given...

Re: Job Vacancy NSW
Sounds like exciting times for you. Is the move permanent? Too bad Kingsgrove is too far from home for me, sounds like you are leaving a nice work place.

Re: Calcium Carbonate classification confusion
As I said, not a DET school so we don't have access to anything other than the original paper copy of CSIS - so no updates for us. Good to hear that you have access to something that is current. We should all only do what those-greater-than-us tell us to do!

Re: Calcium Carbonate classification confusion
The ultimate decider on the classification of a chemical is the safety data sheet from the supplier. Chemwatch SDSs are not recognised by legislation. I am not in a DET school, but from the outside I would be concerned about relying on CSIS unless it is updated regularly. And Chemwatch is probably n...

Re: Where to buy polystyrene?
Well, that is the sort of thing I was worried about, not to mention the time it would have taken to source some! I'm now been sent out to by large cleaning sponges. Hoping I can find some at the $2 shop.

Re: Where to buy polystyrene?
Problem solved - the HT has decreed that I won't be cutting up polystyrene because of the WHS risks not to mention the huge mess it will create. She was off to speak to the teacher to work out another way of doing the prac (they had to construct something that could withstand the elements eg water, ...

Where to buy polystyrene?
Anyone have any ideas where I can purchase a slab of polystyrene? The teacher needs 10 pieces which measure 20x20x20cm. I have heaps of small bits but nothing that size. I need it for next week, so will need to buy it, can't depend on people buying things with packaging.

Re: GHS Labeling
I'm happy with what Riskassess have on offer. As Linotas as done, I have read the code of practice and it all makes sense to me. I think the confusion arises because we are really dealing with very small quantities. Chemwatch labels could be being designed for containers which hold hundreds of litre...

Re: removing residue off reagent bottles
Hi Bec - use the plastic disposable ones for making agar plates. They need to be sterilised before disposal - there are plenty of other posts that discuss this. The whole lot can be treated and then thrown away. I do as Narelle does with the bottles, rinse them but always wear safety goggles and glo...

Re: GHS Labeling
I'm with you Linotas - that was my understanding too. I rarely send the full container into a class room for fear of contamination. I have small samples in specimens jars that go out to classes.

Re: GHS Labeling
Hi Sunray Is that just the purchased chemicals, or will you be leaving your stock bottles and droppers as well? I am not re-labelling purchased chemicals, but do plan on re-labelling my solutions i've made. It is time they were re-done as some have had changes to their classification in recent times...
