Re: Eco friendly Baggie Science?

Yes - I diligently take it all home and drop it off at Woolies when I eventually get there... I think my staff room thinks I am absolutely crazy but so what! All the little things count much more than the big things that politicians promise but never deliver!

Eco friendly Baggie Science?

I've got a lot of teachers wanting to do the Baggie Science experiment - CaCl2 or DampRid mixed with Bicarb soda and Universal indicator in a Ziploc bag. Any ideas on how I can reduce the plastic bag footprint? Last year I washed out all the bags and reused them as many times as possible but some te...

Re: Chem storage in lead tray

That's why I am wondering as well, Merilyn1! Turns out there are quite a number of these drawers scattered around the old building, they've been stacked neatly so the lead was invisible. Sometimes I'm too scared to open unused cupboard doors, a treasure trove of headaches! Bigmack, I'm relieved I'm ...

Chem storage in lead tray

Can anyone enlighten me? I have no idea why these trays/drawers were designed like this. The bottom half is empty and the top half is lined with lead. They are part of custom-made shelving and one is in my chem store room, holding lead nitrate bottles on porcelain saucers. They are also very heavy! ...

Re: Problems with AgNO3 solution

I think I should go into the Silver Nitrate black market. I have been here 20 years and have NEVER purchased a new bottle of Silver nitrate. I have 475gms of silver Nitrate still left At $100 + for 25 gms I am sitting on a fortune! Even at around $400 for 100gms its worth a lot. :w00t: That is one ...

Re: Repairs to Science equipment

This morning Bob Death came to the North Shore and spent a couple of hours repairing and assessing equipment for me. I don't know how much it will come to, but I have a large pile of back-to-life equipment! So much cheaper than buying new, and so much better for the environment :clap3: I'm sure thos...

We're in the same boat - a lot of Heinneman text books and others. I hate to throw anything away, there is always someone whose needs are greater than mine.

I was laughed at when I put the rubber end in the solution - that's apparently the bit that you are meant to hold! Don't have many left now, replacing them slowly with the white stirring rods, I think they're great.

This is always my example I use when talking about how old, and out of date CSIS is. It is a crime that students in DET schools are being exposed to a chemical that has now been found to be so toxic. Not to mention the poor labbies that handle the solid. It really is time the DET caught up with the...

Re: Dropper bottle teats

I don't have any dropper bottles anymore all in stull bottles no more contamination, less spills and very little deterioration. Silver nitrate bottles are covered in foil been using like that for 8-9 years now not a problem. Iodine in amber regent bottles kid use disposable droppers. Macca , how do...

Great idea, Labbie!
Might not be necessary with this new design, the markings are printed on the inside of the tubing, doesn't look like they can be worn away by the sliding marker.

Re: Spring Balances

I've recently bought a new Premium style, much better and stronger than the old style. From Haines, code P350. Not cheap at $16 but hopefully an investment. We are keeping them for Seniors and letting the juniors use the old tubular ones. Until recently we were using the even older version, essentia...
